Ok so i kinda procrastinated about the 3,000 mile oil change thing.... but ne wayz... i was running mobil 1 full synt. 10w30 in there.... well its been overdue or awhile, but my low oil light came on.... so yeah...
my car doesnt burn oil nor does it smoke.... i can't figure out why the light came on.... even if i start it up on a cold morning it still doesnt smoke so....
i remember reading in mustang milestones that 10w30 is not thick enough for the clearences in a 5.0, so if i use 10w30 it will consume oil at a health rate, so i should use 10w40.... well thats exactly what i did.. i bought Mobil 1 full synth. 10w40.... does anyone think that this was a bad choice for me to use 10w40 for my car?
thanks all
i look forward to your thoughts..

i have yet to find some one else who when changing their oil ( every 2000 miles or when they get bored ) details the under side of their car.
X-C April 2010,Internals April 2011, or blown engine, witch ever comes first.
The transformation has begun!
10w40 is fine.
Me and my dad have ran Valvoline 10w30 in my Mustang and his '95 F-150 (5.0) since the day we bought them.
If you're LOW oil light comes on, it's usually because you have LOW OIL... Doesn't matter if your engine burns oil or not, if you are low on oil, you need to put more oil in.

yeah ummm kinda figured that but it was more of a concern of where it went.... idk if i said this earlier but i read in a mustang milestones magazine in an article i belive top ford mustang engines... i believe the 5.0 came in 2nd, it said something that due to...how you say tolerances or clearences of motor, if u are using 10w30 or lower expect your 5.0 to "consume" oil at a healthy rate... if i find this magazine laying around ill come back and quote what it says exactly

Any freshly rebuilt 302 I've ran (old '68, new '89) don't use oil. The older original ones all have lost about a quart every 3000 miles. I've always run 10w30 in them because the one time I ran heavier oil made the lifters slow to pump up, and the engine just didn't seem to like it.
I say don't worry about it untill it starts to burn a quart every 1000 miles
What does the owners manual say? What about Chiltons and Haynes, what do they say to use?
I'm curious...

Im having an issue with my low oil level light. I just put about 1.75 quarts in and my dipstick reads full, however my low oil light willl still come on half the time and not let me start the car. Better yet, my hood release cable just snapped and i cant figure out how to open the hood without the knob in the car. Whats causing this? Can I fix it myself cheaply? and how can i open my hood?
My Haynes manual says 10W-30 unless extreme cols weather then 5W-30
What is classified as extreme cold weather? I'm in Chicago and without thinking put 1.75 quarts of 5w-30 in since thats what im used to putting in the rest of my families' cars...Should i change it?
pull off the kick panel if its broke right there where u pull it at hood release and grab the cable with a pair of pliers..mine broke at the hood latch and i cut the cable cut the plastic overlay and expose the little cable inside and pull it with pliers..left it open and torn down till new cable and release came in..
and on oil i use castrol syntec 10 w40 and im in texas..no issues here and ive got a fresh 347..65 lbs of oil pressure cold..about 45 after it heats up and 35 at idle..just fyi
All engines burn oil, whether you see smoke or not. Soem times its such a small amount that its hardly visable on your dip stick. Its actually healthy for you engine to burn small amounts, high revving race engines are intentionally buil loose to allow this for cooling and cylinder lubrication reasons. When I was a Porche Tech it was ok by manufaturing standards for some of their higher performance cars to consume up to a quart in 3k miles. What you should take from that is that is OK to use a little oil!
The 3k oil change is really a thing of the past, that was reccomended in the 50'-60's and oils are much more high tech now. If you are not towing heavy loads regularly, racing every weekend or operating in overly dirty conditions, Like say a dump truck in the desert, then you dont have to change your oil at 3k miles especially if you are using synthetic oils! Now the norm is to change between 4500 and 6k... Just keep an eye on your oil leve, color and smell...Oil is like your blood, if you run out you die, same principals for your engine!
You will be fine with the 10-40!

i agree with scotty..like i said i got my 347 in and did usual "burn in" let the rings seat and ran engine low and high rpm ..changed oil @ 440 miles so engine was decently broke in and just hit the 3000 mark and did it again..it used a 1/2 quart in 2600 miles..my father in law is a 30 year veteran mechanic and he says a quart per 3000 on a decently modded motor is nothing to worry..keep eye on it i usually check mine on sundays when i wash car and do overall clean and inspect of things..its just force of habit to change mine @3000...this is my 4th stang so i love to take good care of my car..its my baby what can i say lol..
