Default 1994 Mustang GT, header question

do you have to pull the tranny out to put long tube headers on a 94 mustang, if it is a 5 speed?

The trans can stay. But be ready to jack that engine WAY up and down a bunch of times. I gave up on mine and took them to an exhaust shop. So far that's the only thing I didn't install or fix myself.

If it was an AODE, you might but with it being a 5 speed, you should be able to wrestle them in there. I will say removing it would make it easier though.

"wrestle them" is an understatement!

If you remove the trans then won't you have to remove the engine too? Without the motor mounts, the trans is the only thing holding the engine in right?

You would have to have additional support if you take out the trans, yes. I wouldn't trust just the engine mounts to hold it.

Yup, wrestle is an understatement. You'll be making up some cusswords too.

Ha! One tool that always seems to work, but you'll never find in a toolbox.... Cusswords!

Like I said, I just ended up giving up and taking it to a shop to have them installed. Me and my dad got as far as getting the driver side header in (not BOLTED in though) and we tried the passenger side and gave up.

I don't know exactly how much power it added but I noticed a difference. I'd guess around 10 HP gain.

Depending on your combo, they can add a good bit of torque on the lower end. Good for a tenth or two in the quarter. I just had my engine out and would have replaced my shorties, but every set of longtubes I ever owned were a pain. They burn up starters, blow gaskets, interference issues, etc. Excellent quality headers do that bad stuff less, but check out the price!

For now I'll just find another way to make that last bit of extra power I am giving up.

Suspension upgrades in progress.

The only "problems" I've had with my long tubes is that I get a header leak about once a month (common for ANY header swap), and I burned one of my O2 extension wires.

I have seen headers that don't blow gaskets, but they are VERY spendy. Hookers and a few select other brands.

Yeah, after I blew my first header gasket I made it a habbit to go through and tighten my header bolts once a week.

I haven't had one problem with my passenger side headers, just the drivers side for some reason.
