Well, I've not done much freeway driving with my 95 gt but today I decided to drive it to work. 45 miles away. I noticed a small amount of slop/play in the steering. About an inch worth, where you can tell it is not grabbing anything. Its getting cold and the less I have to troubleshoot the better......So, anyone had this same issue? and if so what fixed it?
It almost feels like the knuckle on the steering shaft could be the culprit...
Oh and btw.....I took on a late 90's trans am this morning and kicked the crap out of him.....just thought I would share..

about the steering. more than likely its the rag joint. call mps auto- 770 867 2644. cost me $25 shipped. maybe not actually, i think 25 plus shipping. anyways it was less than 40 total. takes 2 bolts, and about 20 minutes or so. it connects below the steering wheel and at the rack. easiest thing ive replaced on the car.
let me know if you have any questions about it

I had the same issue on my car but it was where the steering shaft will slide in and out. there is a nylon bushing in there that melted causing alot of play. i decided to be cheap and took the shaft off (it is square tubing) and used an air hammer to pound the outer shaft tighter onto the inner shaft, this made it a little harder to slide in and out making it a pain to reinstall but was cheaper than buying a new shaft from flaming river or something.
That type of play is actually normal, the rack splines get worn when the wheel is straight up but will tighten up after you turn the wheel. That's where the wheel always is, therefore where the most wear on the rack occurs. e

Luckily we have rack and pinion steering so there i'snt as much to trouble shoot. I'd check the rag joint first. Then the wear on the splines where the rack and pinion meet. May have to get one or the other. Good luck and let us know what solves the problem.

As said before could be many things,i had the same issue. My rag joint was good, turned out to be wear in the shaft, the bit which slides inside the outer shaft had lots of slop.
I set it to length & welded the sliding sections of the shaft together,no play at all now.
