I am having rear-end trouble again.when on interstate or at a steadyspeed and let off.I installed 4-10 gears and 6-8 weeks later i had same problem.when i took apart my spider gears where all ate up.I tried to put back just like I took it apart.so being i dont know what im doing i would like to replace complete rear-end.I have herd the fox rear works its just a little wider.I also have herd the explorer rear has 31 spline axels with 3.73.if so i can get that and pay someone to rebuild it because my rear end will have broken spider gears again i bet.Is it the shims inside clutch pack that im putting wrong or ring gear shim that makes spider gears eat up like that.ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT I SHOULD DO .THINGS OR REALLY TIGHT MONEY WISE.I CAN GET A COMPLETE REAR-END FOR 150$.IT DOES NOT MATTER WHAT REAR I GET.THEY ALL 150$ IF I PULL IT.
they dont have any.do you know of anywhere that has them and ships free.I saw somewhere in a magazine but i cant find the number now.we do have a mustang salvage yard in kansas but they get extra just because they or mustang only yard i think but i will call tomorrow.I wil be happy to get different gears the 4-10 is to much with boost.I put them thinking na.wish i would have never touched it.
they dont have many v8 sn95's around here.Has anyone put a fox rear.I think its a little wider anyone know how much.Has anyone built there rear using 31 spline axels and t-lock from junkyard and if so can you tell me what year and if you used 2 driver side axels(driver or passenger has axel same length as ours).I have it jacked up i am going to check my penion nut dont guess i could be that lucky.94 COBRA WHY NOT 4-10 GEARS.MY 89 5-SPEED HAD THEM WORKED GREAT.
update;pinion nut was lose.I got a big wrench and was able to get several turns on it.The first couple turns turned really easy the last couple it took all i had but dont you have to put really tight to crush the crush sleve?I am asking around to see if i can find someone who has dial indicator and has done this before but no luck.I can go buy one but really shure how to check and i have read how to several times can someone give me a simple means of checking pinion depth and how do you know if spider gears or installed correct when on bench.
95gts,
the pinion nut preloads the pinion bearings so its not so much a matter of just cranking down on it. I believe the torque setting is supposed to be 150 ft lbs. The crush washer is not simply to be crushed. If you over tighten it you will burn up the pinion bearings. You are supposed to tighten it to where it takes 15-18 Inch puonds to turn the gearset(minus axles). Now that you have been in there a few times do a little reading and you can figure it out.
i have rebuilt 20 or so 8.8 rears, what you did was wrong.
you need to open that rear up and replace the crush collar with a new one. if you had a loose pinion nut that means you have bad bad things going on in there.
with new bearings i go for 20-25 inch pounds of rolling resistance.
as far as wider rears, i used a lincoln mark7 rear since it has the large disc brakes and is wider then 99-04 stangs.

wayne thanks and i have a couple questions.describe rolling resistence.after i put all my ass into wrench under car(its on jack stands so its not easy)I had to really try hard to get rear to turn just trying to spin it turning yoke.howdo i measure '' rollong resistance.Another thing is i think spider gears or eating themself up again.I put same amount of shims in clutch pack and it was kind of like changing clutch on my streetbike plate then fiber then clutch then fiber correct.it was only spinning one tire so when i put 4-10 gears i rebuilt it.
THANKS AGAIN.I just talked to midwestmustang(salvage yard here in ks)they have good low miles 3.73 with 31 spline t-lock for 190$ to my door.I would also get carbon fiber clutch pack and rebuild it .would you know where i can get a video to explain in detail for stupid people like me.I understand the '' pound with axels out.what about clutch pack.what causes spider gear to eat themselves up.should i be able to just put it back just like i take apart but with new fibers. On the ring and pinion after i set penion nut the do i put marking material to check gear allignment?
ok I have read the a couple installation instruction and info on this.my question is it said to set pinion nut to 250ft lbs then after that set preload but after i put 250' lbs on pinion nut how am i going to get a inch pound reading on same nut to check rolling resistance.what am i missing?everything else i think i understand and will take apart and try again once i have correct method and not going in and just praying it correct.I was going to leave crush sleve out untill i get bearing pre-load set.IF I CAN GET CORRECT METHOD AGAIN IF I SET PINION NUT 250FT LBS HOW DO I GET INCH PER POUND AFTER I SET NUT TO FT POUND.THANKS I THINK I GETTING CLOSE TO UNDERSTANDING THE REST
