Question 1994 Mustang GT starting and idling issues

my car and mods :1994 Mustang GT. mods include, BBK CAI, 70mm TB, MSD coil, cap and rotor, and wires 8.5mm, Flowmaster exhaust, high flow cats and shorty headers.( Im not sure on the brand of cats and headers they were done before I bought the car.)

Issue: Sometimes when I try to start my car, it will take longer than normal to turn over, and then the idle fluctuates between 400-1400. at normal idle it sits at 500-600 according to my dash tach. any suggestions?

First I'd suggest cleaning the MAF sensor element. Use MAF, Electrical contact or Non-chlorinated brake cleaner. If the element is dirty and it will be if it hasn't been cleaned in a long time the signal to the PCM may be erratic causing the idle issue. An other possible cause is a vacuum leak (split or disconnected tubing). These are the almost free fixes. Try them first and let us know if other options need to be considered.

Used a MAF cleaner, tightened down all my hose clamps, checked for anything loose. I haven't noticed a stalling, but the rpm did drop almost to the point of stalling when I was heading out this morning. Haven't noticed the starting issue again since I "fixed" it. Gonna keep monitoring though, it was a problem that didn't arise all the time.

That almost sounds like an IAC (idle air control) valve problem. They can be cleaned but usually only with limited success. One of the first things I bought was an OBD-1 code reader. They are great in identifying problem areas and can be had for about $30.00.
