smog check question..

I just put my stock cat pipe on my stang for the smog check. My check engine light occasionally turns on but then it goes off. I heard that it will automatically fail if it does that, even if it doesn't turn on during the check. Is this true? My oxygen sensors were oily, could this be the problem?

Don't know about your sensors, but my check engine light has been on since the dawn of time, and I passed the smog check no problem. Where are you? Different places different tests.

Im in california. I took it today and it passed, but as soon as I drove off, the check engine light turned on.

Our test is almost as bad as yours. I don't think it woulda mattered.
