I read somewhere that the GT cam is different and better than the Cobra cam. In other words, the GT cam will actually make more power than the Cobra cam in the same engine. Could there possibly be any truth to this?

well gt mustangs 94-04 use two cams while the 96-01 and 03-04 cobras use 4 cams. i dont see how you could use cobra cams on a gt? unless swapped over to 4v heads?

I think you need a history leason...lol
94-95 gt still ran the old 5.0 HO. And this is the 94-95 section of this site so just a FYI.....we like push rods here.

oops didnt notice that lol. i was posting multiple post at a time. damn it. anyway back to the ops question, i would think that the cobra cam would give a better gain then the gt cam. Although i also believe either way you would be better off with an aftermarket cam unless you are getting the cobra cams free.

As for which is better...I am not the guy to offer opinions...since I know very little about comparing one cam to another in such a very general way...each has its place...
That being said, the GT cam is not bad. Throw some 1.7RRs on there...it is actually fairly decent for a mild top-end combination. For the price, however, if you are looking to gain by swapping a cam, there are tons of better options available. A custom cam, although it sounds expensive, really is not too much for what you get out of it, especially if the build warrants it. But, for a bolt-on top end assembly, Comp and Trick Flow make decent off the shelf cams that can be thrown in without causing heartaches for your idle...

Yes. The Cobra cam was designed to restore some of the low rev torque lost by adding the GT40 heads/intake to the Cobra 5.0.
The stock GT cam with 1.7 ratio rockers is a good combo even with aftermarket heads/intake but there are several off-the-shelf performance cams that'll do an even better job.
i think a lot of people hear that the gt cam is better than the cobra because over the years its proven itself to be very good for power adder applications. ive read lots of times that the GT cam is great for supercharger applications
Yeah I've heard several times the GT cam really isn't that bad. The weak points of the GT are the intake/heads.
And 2.73 gears
And 1 piston brakes
And very restrictive exhaust system
But hey at least they got the cam right!

Lots of mods. I killed the transmission. Basically restoring car now...bought a forged 347. Looking at adding N2O
