Gas smell while inside the car, noticed after topping off gas tank??

I have just in the past week noticed a strong gas smell in my car. It is worse with the windows down riding around town. The only thing this past week I changed is that I started topping off my fuel when I'm at the pump. I do not see any leaks or any dead grass where I park my car. But my gas mpg has gone down too. The only thing I can think of is o2 sensors may be bad. Performance wise it will still perform well it's just the smell of gas that worries me. I even installed an exstinguisher in my car the other day because of it.

My 95 gt had a problem with leaking gas. At first i could only smell it then a month or so later i noticed it dripping from the tank. It only happened when I filled my tank full. My problen was the gasket around the top of the fuel tank, where my fuel pump went in. It could be the same for you. If you think its comming from the fuel tank make sure that you run your car empty before dropping the tank. Just a thought.

Hey man if you find out it is your O2 sensors go to oxygensensors.com. I try to let everyone know how good there prices are. Went to Auto Zone and they wanted around $72.00 ea. I got the pair for about that. Hope this info can save you some doe for more Camero eating mods $$$$$$$$$

You could be overfilling your tank and causing raw fuel to enter the carbon canister. If the canister gets raw gas in it you would smell a strong gas odor and your mileage will go down, because of the extra fuel entering the engine. Also check the seal where the gas filler pipe enters the tank, this seal can leak if it begins to dry rott.

I had/have a similar problem. I have a 98 convertable V6. I had an issue when filling up it would leak fuel. It urned out to be a fill tube donut at the gas tank. It dry rotted and leaked fuel.

I replaced it but still get fuel smell when filling up.

thats why you dont post to top your gas tank off your gas tank should never be over 90%full its your carbon canister see if it smells real strong bye your right finder

my tank laeked,it was the seal at were the filler pipe gos in to the tank. i droped the tank and changed the seal,all ok now.
