Default 94 gt automatic can't shift into 2nd gear

I have recently bought a 94 gt with an automatic transmission. I started to notice that when the transmission tries to shift into 2nd gear, it keeps hanging at high rpm till it pops to 3rd gear?. Can anyone help me?

my take on this is that if you handy and like to work on your on car I would drain and replace the tranny filter and refill with fresh auto fluid and then see what it does if that doesnt fix it then write back and we can go from there
good luck

+1^

If that doesn't help, it sounds like the tranny is on its way to the grave. Don't try to force it by hitting the throttle, this will just make the problem worse.

I talked to various mechanic and said that the problem might be because the speedometer doesn't work. Is that true?

Incorrecto. el wrongo. however you want to say it. His 94 has an electric speed sensor in the trans...by/in the tailshaft.

so...We do have an electric speed sensor in the trans...but I doubt that is your issue. I'd try the advice first given by superponycardude and see how it does. The trans could be going bad, it's not uncommon.

Except the PCM needs the signal from the VSS to shift the tranny properly. If the VSS isn't working neither is the speedo.

He doesn't know why the speedo isn't working.

That fault usually throws the system into limp home mode, during which the transmission will shift very firmly and quickly and overly soon for each gear. That doesn't really fit the symptoms he's describing.

Yes...he needs to address the speedometer lack of function, but it sure sounds like another AODE biting the dust OR a very clogged filter combined with old fluid.

Well I'm going try if the cable that connects with the speed sensor and the computer is producing current. If not, then I'll have the transmission fixed.

I would fix the obvious first. If the spedometer isnt working either test of replace the VSS. If the key is on and you spin the VSS while its plugged in it will produce a signal, if the spedometer doesnt read anything you could always try replacing the sensor.... VSS is a input to the pcm to determine shift points, I mean is that not an obvious input for the pcm to determine shift points by how fast the vehicle is travelling as well as TPS to determine load.

Fix the spedometer, check your transmission fluid with the vehicle running... If its brown and smells burnt then you may have something serious going on int here. You may also have a leak and thats why your transmission isnt responding properly due to low oil in the valvebody. If that be the case the damage has been done.
