The gears for the odometer on my 95 mustang GT crumbled. I replaced them but the odometer is still not working. I checked everything for freedom of movement and everything works when turned by hand. It's a manual transmission. The speedometer works fine. Any ideas???

Are all the wires connected properly? Did the motor that spins the gears give out at the same time as the gears?

Did you check the fuse? Maybe it popped when the gears went...

Wow... It's bad enough that the SN95 odometers are crap, but now I am reading there are "motors" and "fuses" involved to worry about too!

What ever happened to gears spinning and turning the numbers?
Ford really screwed the pooch making them overly complex if this is the case...

Well how else is the dial supposed to turn if there is no motor to turn it and no fuse to regulate the current going to the motor?

My best guess is if they didn't do it the way they did, they could have used a series of gears and shafts off of the drive shaft to convert the power coming out of the engine into something that could be used for the odometer...
Hahaa. I think it is pretty simple for a spinning dial odometer. The digital ones are the ones that are more simple.

Hahaa. I think it is pretty simple for a spinning dial odometer. The digital ones are the ones that are more simple.

I don't know about the SN95, but earlier Fords just used the speedo cable's rotation as the "motor" for spinning the odometer. That is why I was surprised to hear about a motor and fuse.

All the connections are good. The little motor turns freely. Not sure how I can functionally test it. Do you?

I didn't realize it had a separate fuse. Do you happen to know which number fuse it is. I could just check them all so not a big deal if you don't.

uhh because it's way to easy to rotate gears "counterclockwise"...now your low milage find is really a 150K mile dog

Actually I knew what I was getting into when I got our 94 with 170k on the odo when my uncle (who I got the car from) did me the courtesy of saying the odo hadn't worked in a decade!

I have no doubt there are plenty of people that would not have told me that tid-bit of fact, so buyer beware!

I need to check further, but I am pretty sure there is no fuse.
The speedo cable should turn the mechanism if it is like any other car with an analog odo before it.
Non-cable driven odos are usually digital.

My odo didn't work when I first replaced my gears. Turns out I hadn't cleaned out the little compartment enough with compressed air and a paper towel. I'd take it out and give it another once over and blast it with a can of keyboard duster.

Also check to make sure your worm gear has enough room at the bottom so you can just see light between it and the motor. You probably already did that but mine was way too far apart the first time I did this.
