I'll put money down that the "3 88" you see is actually the last digit of the gear ratio and the two digits that indicate the ring gear diameter.
l bet that the tag actually reads 2SL73 88, which would be 2.73 w/ limited slip (Traction Lok) differential and an 8.8" ring gear. There'll be some other codes on that tag too, such as the axle plant and axle model (e.g. S271D) and the build date (e.g. 4D14, or 4F08, etc.).
