Default Some questions about rear gear ratio's

alright... i told you guys i had a free 3.73 rear end. and everyone was shocked that i didnt put them in yet. so here is where i stand. i found out you can look at the tag underneath the car and it will tell you what is in there out of the factory and it says 3.88. i dont know anything about rear gears so is it worth to put the 3.73 bc to me it seems that 3.88 is closer to 4.10s which would make it a faster gear... bc i know that 4.10 is for quick off the line... HELP!

Default 3.73 or 3.88 i'm so confused

I'm so confused

The way you stand right now is the 3.88 rear gears are what you want. If you are going to build that engine to produce 450 hp then I would get 3.70-3.75 and put a 9 inch rear end in. 3.70-3.75 is usually in the mid range of the cam you would be using. You have to take into consideration how and what type of trannie you are using. Also the smaller the number the better the gas mileage.

yea im not going nuts, the car has 88k miles on it.i dont want to push it too hard. i was just going to put on some basic bolt on stuff to "pep" it up a tad.

a 9 inch is over kill i would just beef up the 8.8 rear there are plenty of parts out ther to make it more than strong enough and ive never heard of a 3.88 gear are you sure its not a 3.08 and the tag is a miss print or just dirty as for 80k on your motor its tsill a baby id ont think you will kill it with just bolt ons solong as its a tight running motor

I'd say you have 3.08's...... If you can't find your gear tag or dont trust it, then you can use this to work out once and for all what rear gear ratio you have. http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/46.shtml

^^^^ I know what you mean, my 95 GT convertible auto came with pathetic 2.73 gears that were quickly replaced with 3.73's, the car is alot more fun to drive now.

I'll put money down that the "3 88" you see is actually the last digit of the gear ratio and the two digits that indicate the ring gear diameter.

l bet that the tag actually reads 2SL73 88, which would be 2.73 w/ limited slip (Traction Lok) differential and an 8.8" ring gear. There'll be some other codes on that tag too, such as the axle plant and axle model (e.g. S271D) and the build date (e.g. 4D14, or 4F08, etc.).
