Exclamation 1994 Mustang Engine Rattling Sound

I have a 1994 Mustang GT. It started rattling very bad the past couple of days. We took it to our mechanic and a tune up done. Ran great after we picked it up. The next day its still rattling, not as bad as before though. Now the mechanic is saying the top of the engine is not getting oil, and Rod Bearings are bad and need to be replaced. Could it be as simple as the oil pump? need advice on this :?:. The motor has 220k miles. Thanks

Connecting rod bearings are in the caps bolted around the crankshaft. If they are toast just an oil pump won't solve the clearance issues you have. My opinion, I think you are looking at a rebuild / drop in a replacement engine. See if anyone agrees .....

No way to identify your problem without a more detailed description. This could be anything from a noisy lifter(s), other valvetrain noise, ticking injectors, rod bearing knock, piston slap, etc.

When is it rattling? Startup or all the time? Is it worse when you first start the car or when it warms up?

Is it worst at idle, or when you rev the engine? It it a ticking or a hammering sound you hear?

Even if you have low oil pressure from worn bearings, you can buy some time with much heavier oil (20W50 or higher in the Texas heat). That's not a permanent solution, but I wouldn't accept the mechanic's advice without a 2nd opinion (I'm sure they'd be very happy to install a rebuilt engine). You could also pull one of your valve covers and see if there's any truth to the oiling guess.

i went outside and started it agian. It has a slight ticking sound, and gets louder when revved. The whole car including the engine seems to be rattling and shaking.

So many things to check. You need to verify the oil pressure before assuming it's a pump issue. Rattling and shaking could be multiple things. First check the HB to ensure it isn't wobbling and also check to see if you can either see or feel any rubber protruding from the HB on the engine side. Check to ensure the MAF sensor is plugged in properly. The MAF should have been cleaned as part of the tune-up but is often overlooked.

Good advise right here ^. If you want to try to diagnose it before pulling the engine, get a real oil pressure gauge and hook it up. Even a mechanical $20 piece from the local auto parts store will serve fine.

This was such a spot-on post, I felt the need to quote it - for the second time...

My engine rattles and the check engine light comes on unless I use 93 octane. Pretty sure my timing is off a few degrees with 410,000 miles. I've been told the rattling is caused by detonation and it shakes the valve train (the stock springs are crap after about 200,000 miles). Try running a higher octane fuel and see if it helps. If that doesn't work, it may be your catalytic converters or something more serious in the bottom end of the motor (worse case scenario).

Just the harmonic balancer...you know, that part that if it breaks when you're rolling down the road, you are pretty much replacing everything...:kooky:

Good to hear that you got it squared away!
