Default GT40 Heads

Okay, apparantly they are great for the 302. So if i can find a 96 explorer with them, and then port them, will they work with my stock headers. I have x pipe and cat back exhaust shipped and on its way, but i want to know that my stock headers will work with my 95 gt. Thanks

You can use Explorer heads but they used 2 different style heads for the Explorer. When the 5.0 Explorer first came out it used GT-40 heads which will work with your stock headers. After a few years (dont know what year it was), they switched to GT-40p heads. With these heads you will not be able to use the stock headers because of the plug angle. You will want to get gt-40p specific headers. I used a set of Motorsport headers 'non p specific'. I had to heat up the headers and do some bending to clear the plugs. BTW, why do you want to use stock headers?

ok so if you get gt-40 heads then you will be ok but if you get gt-40p heads then you will be doing some modifying on those headers. Your main problems will be on the drivers side.

they put GT-40 heads on explorers? that's sad, man, just sad.

they wouldn't even put those on stock mustangs, right?

I believe its because the explorer is heavier and they wanted a little more out of it. If you think that is sad.. They also put the gt-40 intake on it and a larger throttle body then the Mustang.

GT-40 heads were OE on '93-'95 Mustang SVT Cobras, '93-'95 F-150 SVT Lightnings, '96-early '97 Explorers, early '97 Mountaineers, and some "marine" engines.

Trucks, SUVs, and marine engines do not have the same fuel mileage and emmisions constraints that cars do.
