Default WOW!!!! Clean those MAFs, Boys!!!!

I just cleaned my MAF sensor . . and . . . WOW!!!!!! It's a whole different car!! No more knocks, pings, lunges, choking, sputtering . . . etc.

By the way . . . as long as you have the MAF out . . . you might consider ditching the safety torx bolts . . . I did. My Philips screwdriver is easier to find. Rock on, folks!!!

Did you know out the casting marks since you where there? I saw something in here about doing something like that and wondered if it did anything.

See above . . it's not a normal torx. It's a "safety torx" which has a hole in the middle to fit over the stud in the screw. I got my safety torx bits at ACE, but I'm sure any good auto place has them. The tool you need is a number 20 safety torx bit.

Boy what a difference. I finally got sometime to clean the sensor and its a different car. I bought the car used and I can tell the previous owner wasnt big on that kind of stuff, plus the paint on the screws was broken so I know it hasnt been done. The sensor had about 1/16 to 1/8 build up, along with the temp sensor.

I cleaned them both and polished the housing, now something interesting happens when I step on the gas, the car now gets out of its own way. By the way I took a small punch and put the unit in a vise and gave a small quick tap and the little "tit" in the screw snapped right off. This allowed me to use my existing torx.

I had the same problem with my car. When I converted it to MAF, I bought the sensor/ meter at a junkyard. Like a moron, I didn't think about cleaning it and the car ran horrible, backfiring, sputtering, pinging. Cleaned it up and all problems solved. I used rubbing alcohol and a q-tip to clean mine.

Here's the howto I posted over in 5.0 tech:

First, locate the MAF sensor on the air intake. It is a small rectangular box with an oval shaped wiring clip on it. The cover is plastic. It is held on by two "safety torx" screws that are located diagonally from one another.

Second, remove both screws, using a #20 safety torx bit (which is basically a torx bit with a hollow center). You can pick one up at any good hardware store. (While you are there, you might as well buy some replacement screws for about 50 cents so you don't have to find the safety torx bit if you want to clean it again in a year).

Third, pull the plastic cover striaght up, being careful not to damage the prongs that extend into the air passage.

Fourth, spray the "wires" between the prongs with carb or electronic solvent until there are no deposits left on them.

Fifth, reinstall in reverse order and test drive your beast!!!!

You can pick up the carb cleaner or electronic cleaner about anywhere.
