Exclamation Start problems & stalls HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys I need your help. I have a stock 1995 5.0 convertible and it has problems dying and it won't restart. I began having trouble about a month ago. I would come out to the car and she just wouldn't start. This was usually after I had driven it that day. sometimes it would happen on a cold start in the morning although it was rare. I went through the usual tune up proceedure. Plugs, wires, distributor cap rotor The problem continued. I started looking at fuel. I have replaced the fuel filter, the fuel pump, and the fuel pressure regulator, I now know the thing is getting fuel. My mechanic then replaced the ignition module. This has still not solved the problem. I have gone from starting problems to this thing dying on the highway at 70MPH just dead. I'll either shoot some starter fluid down the intake to get it going or wait and the thing will eventually start after a couple hours. The part that kills me is that I can sometimes get it to go with some starter fluid but othertimes I can't. Then I'll just come back to it when it's had a few hours to chill out and she'll just fire up with the key. My mechanic has gone from chasing spark problems to chasing fuel problems and back to chasing spark problems...........I'm firing my mechanic. Thought about bringing it to FORD...............but I know they are going to take me to the cleaners. Please advise

How about your altenator???

check the power output. even at idle. if there isn't enough amps there, maybe it doesn't have enough to drive the spark plugs..

Thanks! I'll check the alternator.

No codes have lit up my "service engine soon" light. Can the computer store codes without this light going on?

Default I think the alternator is ok..................

I talked to someone from Ford and they said if I didn't have a check engine light then I wouldn't be getting any error codes. As for the alternator? I still have plenty of juice in the battery. So I think the alternator is fine. the electrical guage on the dash is always right in the middle and the car turns the starter like no ones business. I would think I'd be running the battery down all the times I've tried to turn it over when it dies but it seems to be fine. It died again this weekend after driving it for fifteen minutes. Just died at a red light. I pushed it off the road and let it sit for a couple minutes. I then turned the key and I was back in business. That's the part that blows my mind.

I am too having the same problem almost. Mine doesnt die like your big dog, but after I drive it and shut it off its nearly impossible to start. When it does it sounds like its major flooded, I have to mess with it for about five minutes to keep it started and its back firing, spitting and everything. It blows smoke white and black, eventually I have to run it about 5 grand to clear it out. Once on the road it burps and if I press down on the pedal it hesitates and then takes off. The wierd thing is though about 10 miles down the road it all vanishes and runs fine. Thats the part that is making me scratch my head. I am going to post up a post on it right now.

after mine starts back up it is right as rain. Little bit of a stutter on idle once I get her started. That cleans up in 30 seconds. I get FULL POWER no miss fires it's like it has no problems at all.......................until it mysteriously dies at a stop light 15 mins later.

I am freaking baffled, I am going to check my TPS but I am starting to wonder what is going on. I have about 115k on it, and the only thing I know that is differnet is I ran fuel injection cleaner threw it about two tanks ago. I wonder if they are worn and now clean they cant keep back the pressure, so they are dribllling into the cylinder? I dont know, just guessing now to be honest, but she is getting tore a new one tonight when I get home.

Alex I have been poking around and I know it can't hurt to clean my MAF. I've gone and cleaned the bottom connectors on the ignition coil too. I'm just looking for shorts and bad computer parts at this point. I have covered almost everything else. I run a K&N air filter that is due for a recharge. I hear there may be some issues with the MAF getting some of the oil particles on the sensor. Just got it back from the mechanic for the fourth time in a week. It of course behaved for him the entire time it was in the shop...............I'm getting closer to making that dreaded call to Ford...............

First, the check engine light will NOT always come on if there's is a code, it depends on what the fault code is. Does the light come on at all, like just when it stalls and then goes away? Also, there are a couple of checks in the Haynes manual that you can do on the ignition system with a multimeter, you might want to give them a try.

Default error codes

Well the check engine light only comes on when she dies and then it goes away. Since the coil has been cleaned up it seems to be starting better even though I know it's under protest. I seem to have a little bobble in the powerband down low. It will pull up top but when I first hit the pedal it seems like it hesitates for a sec. I'm going to check for codes tomorrow. My fingers are crossed because it hasn't died since I messed with the ignition coil I'll report back with an update.

Sounds good big dog, I will let you know what I find out too. Did you see the section of this forum that shows you how to read codes without a reader, just a tester light? They have a whole section on codes and what the are and how to read them without the reader.

Default problem is almost GONE..................

I don't get it

My car starts fine now. It runs smooth. I have what feels like full power. I still get these intermitent bobbles every now and then. I'll be driving and the thing will make like it wants to die and then just come back to life and run like nothing happened. It has quit stalling and seems to start every time. From what I can tell it was a combination of the fuel pressure regulator and the cleaning of the ignition coil that seems to have cleaned it up......................course I don't wanna jinx myself............................

Thank you guys for all the input. I have leanred more about my 5.0 engine compartment then I ever wanted to.........too many little sensors and electronic gadgets. I sould just buy a 1968 and be done with it.................

I'm going to let a 5.0 GURU test it this weekend at the New England Regional All FORD show and see what an expert thinks of it. Wish me luck
