I just finished my T-56 install today and went out for a drive, so far so good. I think I'm going to like the gear ratio better than the T-5, the rpm's don't drop evenly when shifting a T-5, but this T-56 seems really close, I shifted it at 5300 and the rpm's dropped to 3650-3700 between every shift 1st through 4th. I went about my install a little different, I looked at kits to do this and the cheapest I found was $2650 plus $150 shipping. I couldn't hardly afford that route, so I spent several hours on the net looking for a
tranny, I finally found one on racingjunk.com, it was brand new and had been sitting for a while unused, I bought it for $1500, not a bad deal. Now all I needed was the other parts to install it, here's what I used:
Transmission $1500 racingjunk.com
clutch fork $ 39 D&D Performance
tranny mount $ 25 D&D Performance
Driveshaft $ 40 Salvage yard 96 explorer 2wd alluminum
Slip yoke $ 52 Mustangs Unlimited
U-joints $ 30 Advance Auto Part
shorten dr/sft $ 50 Precision Driveline dynamicly balanced at 8000
Nuts & bolts $4.00 local hardware store
crossmember brkts $5.00 YES, $5.00 is right here's how.
I looked at pictures of the xmember brkts and they are so simple, I took cardboard and made a pattern for each side and went to my local machine shop and had them cut out and welded up for $5.00, now all I had to do was paint them, the Kenny Brown brackets are $299, the only difference is his are zinc plated, I can repaint mine several times for another $295. So the grand total is $1745.00 for everything that's in a kit to install a T-56. The prices don't include shipping since it varies from place to place, I had $21.90 in shipping cost, and the
tranny cost me $124 to get it here so I have $1890.90 in all, I saved over $900 this way. I don't know how to put a picture on here but I'd be glad to email anyone some pictures if they are interested in doing this, I can't wait to see what my 1/4 mile times are now, hopefully better. Hope this helps someone along the way.
