Ive got a 94 GT ragtop and my AODE is about to bite the dust. Will a T5 from an 80's or 90's stang work?? I assume it will but just that bellhousings are different. What else would I need besides clutch quadrant, bellhousing, wiring harness for clutch switch, transmission(of course) and maybe a computer. Can ya get by without a computer or simply get a chip or module?? What years flywheel will work? I had a 5speed in my 96 ragtop and loved it. Really sick of this auto slushbox!!
alright man, in order to do the swap a trans from the 93 and earlier will work but however you need to change the input shaft and bearing retainer, reason is the input shaft is a different length in the foxbody's their engine sits 1 1/2 inches farther back, so I'd recommend finding a t-5 from a 94/95 or buy a tremec. Secondly you MUST get a T4M0 computer (computer from a manual) if you do not, using the auto computer will cause the car to jump and surge when it is trying to shift a trans that is not there. Any standart 50oz 5.0 flywheel will work. There are many little things you need to do, if you need help email me at slyvette@yahoo.com and I can tell you everything you need and what to do. Hope this helps..

thanks slyvette!! I'm a mechanic...so a little work doesn't scare me. I knew somthing had to be different. Im planning on getting the parts one at a time...or til it goes boom...whichever comes first. I probably can handle getting a computer...I figured it would "confuse" the computer. I've had several people tell me it doesn't matter. Yeah right...we know better. I will email you for some more info.

-Shifter: $160(for aftermarket, if not included with tranny)
-Shifter Ball: Free(junkyard )
-Flywheel- $100
-Flywheel Bolts- $8
-Clutch Kit- $150 (depends on brand:w/ clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing)
-Clutch Fork- $30 (if using tremec you must get a clutch fork from a fox body)
-Clutch Cable/Quadrant- $89 (for adjustable, price may vary)
-Lower Shifter boot- $35 (from ford)
-Uppser Shifter boot and bezel- $10 (from junkyard)
-Clutch/Brake Pedal Assy: $65 (from junkyard)

-Tranny Wiring Harness- $35 (from junkyard, there is a way around this I'll explain later)
-Dust Plate- $45 (from ford, the plate between engine and tranny)
-Recommend New tranny mount- $35 (not required but might as well now)
-Driveshaft from Manaul- $xx (ok the auto and manual are the same BUT the auto has a small counterweight on the front of it, some ppl get minor vibration from it and some don't so it's up to you if you want a different driveshaft, I'm using the auto one no problems)
-3 Quarts Redline Tranny fluid- $27
How To
-----------
Ok first of all lemme start by saying having a helping hand will be a big plus because the AODE weighs a hefty 240lbs. Doing this swap you will also be cutting off 110lbs off of your car. These directions are not a step by step but a general what you need to do and know about the swap. Now that that's clear lets get started. You can start in the car by removing the shifter bezel, just snaps out of place. Then the center console is going to have to come out, to do this first pull the e-brake up as far as you can. Then there are a few screws inside the compartment, possibly covered by rubber tops, then after you remove that inner piece there will be two screws that hold down the console under it. Then you can reach underneath it and there will be an electrical connector that has to be disconnected, you can also get at this after you pull the console up a little too. There will be two more screws up front as well, near the shifter bezel. The console should pull up and out, kinda tricky to do, be carefull. Now you can unbolt the auto shifter, there is a cable that goes to the shifter that comes from the front of it, you can cut this cable where the wire is exposed in the shifter, then push the wire inside the cable and tape off the end, this is the key lock out switch, if you don't do this you won't be able to get your keys out of the car. Next removing the brake pedal assy can be tricky for your first time. To make life easier there is one bolt that holds the steering shaft on, the upper part of it, take this bolt out and slide the steering shaft down and out of the way, now you can work. There will be a few electrical connectors on the assy and a rod that goes to the brake pedal. Remove all of these, then there are a total of 5 bolts that hold the assy on, 4 going forward and one upward. Now you can get under the car. Remove the driveshaft, 4 bolts (12mm 12point). CAUTION: Make sure the parking break is still up and the wheels are chocked. There are two big nuts that come are under the tranny crossmember that need to be removed, this holds the tranny mount and tranny to the member. Unbolt the dustshield on the tranny so you can get to the torque converter nuts. Remove the 4 nuts that hold the torque converter onto the flexplate, the engine will have to be rotated to do this, either by hand or key. There are a couple electrical connectors that have to be removed and the shifter cable as well. Then there are 6 bolts that hold the tranny to the engine. Make sure you have a jack under the tranny as well. After disconnecting those, you can unbolt one of the bolts for the crossmember. The tranny should slide out, remember it's very heavy! Replace the flexplate with the flywheel, and install the new dustshield behind it, then install the clutch and install the tranny and driveshaft. The tranny wiring harness is the big square connetor along the firewall on the passenger side, near the top. Disconnect and replace with the manual harness. There is a way to bypass this and use the auto harness but don't recommend it, if you need this info email me. Now a BIG misconception people get is that you can use the automatic computer. This is NOT true on 94/95 cars, on foxbody's however you can because they have the AOD and not AODE, the aode is electronically controlled by the computer as when to shift and the computer retards the timing and if you use this computer the car will buck and mis bad at certain times when the computer is trying to shift the auto that isn't there. For those of you that don't know, the computer is under the passenger side kick panel, have to disconnect 3 connectors in the way and a bolt holding it in then a 10mm bolt that connects the wiring harness to the computer, make sure the battery is disconnected first as well. Everything from here on out should be pretty self explanatory, just install the way you took it out, remember to route the clutch cable, which does require that you drill one hole in the firewall, you will see it, there is a preset spot for the whole that is noticeable. And most importantly don't forget to add tranny fluid. Next, go out and have fun with your manual mustang! If you have questions just email me. Good luck! Oh and by the way if this is your first time expect maybe 7-9 hours for install, if you've done it before then why are you reading this, hehe but I can get it down in about 3-4 hours tops, with a helping hand that is. It's possible I left out some details or minor parts, please lemme know, this is all off memory. Good luck again!
