A wideband o2 sensor is used to accurately measure air/fuel ratio. It is a very useful tool for tuning, especially in blown applications.

Like FunkyBoss said, they're increbily useful in tuning a vehicle. However unless you have some experience in tuning and/or have a power adder of one type or another, I would not worry about spending the money on one. The good ones are fairly pricey not very useful unless you plan on tuning the car yourself.

To tune the car you need a handheld tuner or a E-prom burning machine and softwre from Diablo or SCT. 99% of people use the hand held tuner since the e-prom burner and software is way more expensive and not as user friendly. The wideband O2 sensor will give you real world data on how your air/fuel ratio is doing and along with live data logging with the tuner can allow you to dial the car in very well provided you know what you're doing.

I honestly don't know what you would use for tuning and datalogging.
