Default Ram air/cold air induction for under $25

Alright...This is for you poor college folks and other misers around. You may have heard of this before as I know I have, but I haven't heard anyone speak of it in a while. I used PVC pipe to make a cold air/ram air kit myself. It works great. I used 3 inch PVC I think. I just looked it over and went and bought all my 90 degree bends and whatever else I needed at Home Depot. Make sure you get the PVC cleaner and adhesive, otherwise its sure to fall apart from vibration. Here's my route: airbox - 90 degree bend through hole in firewall - foot long down tube - 90 degree bend - short piece - 90 degree bend out my fog light hole. I ran mine out the right fog light light hole (I have a Cobra). I had to remove the fog lights, but I didnt really like em anyways. You could also design (or find it somewhere) a long, but low height airbox and bolt it to the bottom of the front bumper. Also, you gotta have a little engineer/ability in you. It wasn't the easiest thing in the world to make but it probably only took me all of an afternoon to do. The size I used fit just inside the hole on the airbox. Then, I sealed off the rest of the hole with fiberglass.

The most noticable gain will be in the the economy of the car. Mine went up by about 3-4 mpg. Thats huge. You will also notice it sounds much deeper/throatier when you get out on the highway or freeway. The PVC is almost the exact color of my car so it is fairly unnoticable. Anyone else got that bright white?

I also have a good idea for cheap sound deadener if anyone wants to hear about it. Great for making trunk systems and reducing road noise, but I love the sound of my mustang

I thought about that awhile ago when I owned a 85 jetta but I was like $25 just is not worth it in this clunker. But ya there is not need to pay $160 for that expensive one. You could also buy a cheap $20 intake from ebay then just change the filter to a k&n or something liek that and have your self a intake that way to.

SO lets hear about the deadener!

I did it to my 92 Ford Ranger. Fabricated a Battery Relocation (about 12 inches back from it's position at the front fender on the passenger's side), removed the metal plate that it was sitting on and ran the filter there. Then took some tin foil and some metal scraps I had around the house and fabricated a heat shield the fit in around the filter.

It pulled great cold air and sounded great compared to the stock one.

I ran into one problem, it didn't pass a state inspection. And I then had to basically put the stock one back in and make it look like normal again, and was told if I want a cold air intake to buy one that was certified or something.

If that's not a concern tho, it works out great. Make sure you smooth out the inside of the PVC pipe so there aren't any sharp edges. Also remember, the fewer the bends the better, can't remember but off the top of my head (I do HVAC work) one 90 Degree bend removes about 1/2 of the CFM of the incoming air.
