1995 5.0L engine on it's last leg. What should I do?
Well my 95 HO is on it's final run. This past week it developed an violent piston slap when I tried to race someone. Kinda of odd since it started the tapping right off the bat and not after going up in RPM. Sucks though, I kept up with this car like an old guy. Always new Motorcraft FL1-HP filter every 3000 mile, and sometimes less. Regularly maintained, but 130.000 miles of 3700lb racing is too much I guess.
Anyways, I was wondering if this was a some-what common failure? I know that it's not so uncommon for cylinder #8 to die, but my slap is on cylinder #5.
I took a video while diagnosing it, though it would be cool to see the rockers in action. Doesn't pick up the tapping noise too well, but that's not what I made it for.
Doesn't look good fir the Vic. I don't think I'll be building it up again, since the chassis is not the best. I had to repair some frame rust a few years ago, as well as finding that it's not extremely strait. So it looks like I'll be getting a beater to drive and find a new 82-87 Vic completely devoid of rust. Will be kind of hard to do actualy, because I want a stick top, which is rare in good condition. If the block is good and it's only the rotating assembly, maybe a 331 stroker kit is in order for the future Vic. Or if I land some money maybe a 3 valve 4.6L or 5.4L. Who knows, but it will probably be at least a year off before I start another project. college is eating me alive.

Well, I got it all fixed. Long ordeal, cold late nights, and numb fingers, but I got my baby back! Melted a piston, had to replace, hone, and put back together. Did some cleaning up under the hood while I had some of the parts with me at my house. Couldn't do much with the car as I kept it at my Parent's place while I fixed it.
The attached pics are a summary of the overall project. For everything on the repair and more than you ever wanted to know about my Vic, here is my CarDomain's Update page.
dont know about up north but here in texas and in and around houston you can find these older crown vics all over the place...i've had 2 1990 crown vics...one with the 5.0 fuel injection and one with the 5.8 carb.
the second one listed was the 351, but modified and was classified with some parts houses as a 400 block.
my brother in law and I bought these cars at public police auctions...old police cars, and it would be cool if you could find one if anything for extra parts...we haven't paid more than 1000 bucks for one and they all ran strong after a tuneup. the 351 ran for me for about 3 years and I bid 600 bucks on it...wasn't as pretty as my current car, but was awesome...351 police package, duel exhaust with glass packs, lowered with chrome mod rims. just an idea, but if you keep your car, definitly think about a parts car...cheaper. and when you're done stripping it over a few years, sell it to a junkyard for 100 bucks..they'll even pick it up for free.

About 5 years ahead of you. I got a great condition running 351 Police package 84 for $100. Bad ignition module, $5 fix. That was almost 10 years ago. Stripped over the years and eventually hauled off. Attached are the pics of the car as she was hauled away. Next to my car before I had done much of anything to it. My best choice now would be to get an SN95 Mustang as a parts car lol!
Having a parts car now would do me no good. Absolutely nothing in the driveline is an OE part, except the brakes and the driveshaft. And the brakes are scheduled to be upgraded to rear disk and front 12" rotor with dual piston calipers.
From what I hear on here the cause is likely a bad tune. Since this is an OEM ECU, I guess I have no choice but to get a tune done.
