Default 18x9s and 18x10s on a 1994 Mustang GT?

Is anyone running these sizes and are there any clearance issues? And what sort of lowering set up? (I don't want to have more ground clearance than in my truck...

Default 18's

I run these size wheels (with 275/35 WR18 tires up front, and 295's out back) on my 2002 no problem.

I think you will have scrubbing issues up front on your 94 with tires that wide, though. 99-04 works, I'm just unsure about cars with the 5.0.

Tire wise... I would have 245s up front and 285s out back...

Aye, I'm having some issues myself with this very same thing...

I've had 275/40's all the way around (bought the car like this), but I decided to rotate my tires this weekend (front to back, each side), and I noticed that the insides of the front two tires were _severely_ torn up. On one the metal was clearly visible.

Call me crazy, but I'm starting to think that the previous owner perhaps didn't do enough homework before sticking 275's up front on this car. :P

It's a damn shame, though -- I liked the way my car would stop on a dime with having 275's on the front.

The only issue will be a little bit of rub up front against the swaybar when you turn the wheel to the extreme. Otherwise you'll clear for sure.

Remember, any minor issues such as the above mentioned won't mean anything compared to how good your ride will look with all that wide rubber.

a bit of clarification -- when you say "18x9" up front and "18x10" in back, are you saying that the rims themselves are different sizes?

Yes. The rear wheels are an inch wider than the fronts. If you click on my profile, you will see pics. The idea is to get the most rubber under the rear end that your suspension allows. Lots of folks use 315 rubber (hard to find except for brief-lifespan drag radials or ultra-expensive super tires) for this reason. The wider tires demand wider wheels. And no, you can no longer "rotate" the wheels front to back.

Thanks. She's a sweet machine. Currently for sale in AFM classifieds (I hurt my left knee - I'm old and arthritic) and I'm wanting to buy an 03-04 Mach One with an auto tranny (she's a 5 speed).

Those Firestone 295/35 WR18 Firehawks are nice tires - I'm very pleased with them. They're the recommended tire for our cars by SVTOA.

If you want to be able to swap tires, stick with 9" all around. Not as sweet a look as the bigs in the back, but...

You'll get an extra 5 or 6 thousand miles out of your tires.

thanks for answering!

just took a look at the inside of my rims today -- turns out all four of them are 17x8, yet they've got 275/40 tires mounted on them...

is this safe? from most of the online catalogs I've seen, tires that big are advised to be mounted on rims no smaller than 9'' wide -- is that a "set in stone" bit of advice, or can it be ignored if necessary? I'm needing to buy tires in the next couple of days, and I'd like to get the widest I can!

I've got my eyes on these tires here: Kumho ECSTA ASX

Default 275

The 275's may not be safe - the tire sidewalls must be pinched in quite a bit to fit. A 9" wheel would be my recommendation for 275's.

I know some guys who run 255's on 8" wheels.

Are you sure they're just 8"? Lots of Mustangs have 9" wheels, including some purchased from the dealer. They're identical to the original 8" bullets.

Kumhos are common tires for Mustangs, and I know lots of folks who use them. Good quality tires, though NOT with the grip that some other tire brands boast. You'll get good mileage out of them, and their price point is usually one of the lowest. Good value, imo. Overall.

But I wouldn't put 275's on 8" wheels. Aside from general safety issues, I suspect it would cause them to wear prematurely too.

17x8 is a standard size for fords. a 275 will be fine, no bigger. I run 18x10's and 18x9's on my car with no issues at all..still have the quad shock in place. I run a 295 out back. I ran a 315 on a 17x10 and it would hit a little in turns on the parking brake..if that helps.

Default Size matters

http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/658.shtml

Here's AFM's good chart with tire/wheel width recommendations. Notice that 9" in 35 series is the smallest recommended wheel size for 275 series tires.n I suspect that as the sidwall gets taller, the idea might become even worse.

Most reputable tire stores won't install tires this wide on wheels too narrow - or if they do, you will sign away your warranty on the spot.

This is not to say that some tire stores don't care and will mount anything on anything.

thanks for the info, everyone. just ordered two 255/45's just to be safe.

@tripleback -- yep, they're 17x8, saw it right on the inside of the rim. they're aftermarket rims, too -- you think the guy woulda bought 9'' ones just to save me the trouble later on, you know?

well, this way I can buy two 17x10's or something later on down the road -- 255's on the front is fine for me.
