Default Fuel gauge doesn't work

I recently replaced the odometer gears inside the instrument binnacle and now both the odometer and trip meter are working again. Unfortunately the fuel gauge has suddenly decided to stop working and the needle remains at 1/8 even when I fill the tank up with gas.
I thought the problem might be a bad gauge sending unit in the tank but it seems too much of a coincidence that this problem has appeared at the same time as my odometer gear replacement. All the other gauges work just fine.
I removed the instrument binnacle again to check the fuel gauge. The needle moves freely and it seems normal. Can anyone shed some light on this?

Mmmm....with the fuel gauge, if you remove the ground wire, or power lead, it should zero. If you ground out the gauge (essentially bypassing the sending unit, it should should read 'tilt' full. If it settles it reads anything else on a full tank, you may bave a crappy ground or it's just coincidence that your sending unit is either stuck or failed.

Anyone else wanna jump in?
