my 94 cobra was pinging so i checked the timing and it was at 14 degrees with the spout conncetor out so i backed it off to 12 degrees and still pinged very bad, backed it off to 10degrees still pinged bad so i backed it off to about 8degrees and didnt ping, i am using fresh 93 octane gas, i have herd the dampners on SN-95's go bad and can cause bad timing issues, so i timed it by ear. last season (last summer) i dont remember having any problems with pinging and bad timing readings, any suggestions
pappiokidd, when you do that, are you looking for a sound or something to know that the piston is at TDC? I want to try what you mentioned to see if my damper is good.
take out the spark plug, put a wood pencil in the cylinder, crank the engine with a socket wrench on the harmonic balancer pully bolt until its at top dead center (fell the pencil until it goes as far up as possible while turning the engine), the rotor button should be around 1 o'clock, also check where the timing marks are and time it again with a timing light. hope this helps...

Just as they have said, make sure your timing it to TDC, but with an inductive timing light it lights up as the #1 cylinder fires, so you should have perfect timing. I have mine set at 14 degrees advance.
