Unhappy I cooked My 15" sub... )-,: and mabe damaged my amp

well i had my sub playing, A Powerbase(PB-C156D 300WRMS 400WMax). i had throw some D's playing through the aux port (via mp3) at about 75% volume and i had it running on a rockford what is labled on the back sticker as a 550S,(if 550S 275W a channel) and has a side skirt that says 750S, ( i asume its a 550s becouse of its size.) anyway it started to stink in the car so i turned it down and heard distortion so i powered down the system. i got home and it reaked smoke and all sorts of sht.

is there anyway to determin what the hell this amp is putting out? the thing looks like it was exposed to water when i purchased it off a "friend" (notice the "") who was sure it was a 550S by the size, anyway when i opened it to see if the inside had the same waterdamage , i expected residue of some sign the board looked nice and retativly new. (water could easily get in this it has 4 square holes in the back corneres(factory). i was wondering if anyone else has a 550S and could take a pic of the guts so i can compair.

and i know theres not much to do with the sub anymore but is there anyway i can dabble with repairing it. (or make a frankinsein sub out of it?)i already have freed the skirt from the cage but not the "spyder" part

Interesting fact about MP3 players, Most can only output frequencies down to about 50hz. Everything below that is usually lost. Try a cd directly in your head unit vs. the same track on your mp3. Mp3s sound good through headphones but they suck when hooked to a real system. It is harder to notice on stock systems but when a sub is hooked up you will know. My system sounds like crap with the ipod hard wired directly in to my Alpine & my Sony head units. The speaker is now a big magnet and if your amp smells burnt it is on its way out also.

well were not talking anything special for the head unit. it was a black friday special at best buy its an Insignia... $49.99 w 2 free 6'5" speakers

Vs the 40.00 MP# player 3.5mm jacked into the head unit. the MP3 player wins and outpounds the CD's ...sad i know but i have dont that comparison.

Then that deck is a huge POS, a cd should outperform a MP3 hands down.

Because MP3 files are recorded louder than CD files. Besides the highest and lowest frequencies being eliminated from MP3 files, the dynamic range is compressed so the lower volume passages of the song are almost as loud as the loudest passages. These things are the reason MP3 files are so much smaller than CDs (you can fit a lot more into the same memory space) and the reason that they are not true high fidelity. MP3 files were conceived for applications where ambient noise is intrusive (like most outside venues). In any quieter environment through a quality stereo system the quality of CDs are far superior to that of MP3s.

By the way, I saw the title of this thread: I cooked my 15" sub and thought it was about a toasted sub sandwich.

Keep the sub. If you are like me you are always working on the car in the yard or driveway. Use the huge magnet to find lost screws. It is much cheaper than using the tires to find such screws.

The mismatched panels on the amp sounds like the old pawn shop trick from the 80's. Open a toasted amp that is worth a lot of money and put in a sparks-and-static amp with a hot glue gun.
When they hook it up to see if it works it will. Next person to buy it hooks it up and gets the wrong end of the stick. I got shafted by this once, and I actually knew the guy that blew the amp. His was why I was looking for one. Nice Punch150, with a realistic amp inside. When I found him he paid me back for the amp so I wouldn't turn him in.
