I just picked up a new Alpine HU to replace my Shaker 500. I am picky as hell so I'm trying to find the best fitting/looking dash kit avaiable. If anyone is truly happy with theirs could you give me some manufacturers and or part #'s. I would really like to see what it looks like so if you could post some pics I would appreciate it!
Schoche and Metra are the only brands I know of. They are very similar. Metra has two different models 99-5807 & 99-5812, I think one has additional storage slot, the other holds 3 cds. Scoche FD1424B pictured below, here is link to Metra Metra Online. You have a few options on how to hook it all up. Are you going to use the stock speakers & amp? I highly recommend replacing the stock speakers. Feel free to contact with questions.
Do you have that kit in your car? Could you post a pic installed? I was actually planning to replace the stock speakers first with some Boston Acoustics or JL's. But had a chance to buy the HU brand new for half price so I took it. What do you know about the voltage level fed from the Shaker HU to the factory amps? I have read in this forum that it might be 5V. A few installers I talked to said it should be 12V.

I have the Metra kit installed in my 2006 GT. I will post a pic tomorrow when I feel like blowing off work for a few minutes
As for the voltage regular, I got mine from RadioShack. It is a 5v wafer type regulator and it is type 7805 /Catalog #: 276-1770. What I did was solder some leads to give me additional wire for input/ground/output, then I used heat shrink tubing on the connections.

Reason: Add voltage regulator information
Thanks for the info on the regulator! I purchased a wire harness made for the Shaker 500 subs so I have a resistor that has to be installed inline from the HU to the sub power. This is to prevent a "poping" sound when the system is turned on. Did you have to do this with your system even with the 5v regulator?

The only thump I hear is when the radio shuts off while opening the door. The turn on thump is virtually nonexistent with the 5v regulator. Then again, I only heard ONE Mustang GT that did not have the voltage regulator and that convinced me to spend the $2 to save me the annoying POP.
Also, here is a photo of what my setup looks like:
Nice! I think I can live with that! It will take a while for me to like the look of the pocket, which is what seems to be the only option! I may fabricate some type of pocket cover or hinged panel. I picked up an American International Kit that looks similar to yours! I also happen to have the CDA-9883! How do you like the 9885? I will post some pics when the install is complete! Thanks for your help!

I am kind of used to the pocket look. My 2000 F150 kit had the useless pocket and so did my 2000 Accord Coupe. The only other option would have been either the DVD Alpine or the Pioneer AVIC series, but I couldn't bring myself to spend that much on a radio.
The 9885 has been working great and I mainly purchased it for IPOD control, which it does rather well. The other plus is that when I play a CD, I don't get the last 10 seconds of the song cut off like I did with the Shaker 500. In fact, the 2007 4.0 rental Mustang that was provided after totaling my 2007 Accord car had a better factory CD player than the Shaker series. Kind of sad if you think about it.
Let me know how you like the 9883 because I am considering that unit for my other car, my late wife's 1997 Honda Civic.
I am pleased with how the single din mounting kit looks finished! The awsome look of the Alpine does'nt hurt either. I ended up returning the CDA-9883 for the CDA-9886, which is the best decission I've made in a while. I just did'nt care for the red illumination of the 9883. The trim ring took some fabricating to clear the face plate and allow it to open without binding. One nice feature of the 9886 is that it has full high speed Ipod controls. The cable is run into the center console, out of sight. Thanks for the tip on the 5 volt regulator! I ended up using two regulators soldered together to lower and ease the load and a few peices of aluminum for a heatsink, it works perfectly! I am pleasantly surprised with the sound of the stock speakers, it took some tuning but they sound great. It is only a matter of time though, before they get replace.
