Default For those with auxillary input stereos - question

I've got an 02 GT with a 460 mach 6-disc stereo and I'm pretty happy with the sound quality of the cd player but I'd like to carry around a little more music without carrying all the cd's. I'm looking at buying a headunit with a usb connection to hook up a thumb drive with my mp3s. For those who run ipods or thumb drives through usb or auxillary on stereos - how is the quality? Is it close to cd quality or more like FM stereo quality? I don't want to invest in a new headunit with auxillary if the sound quality is not there.

I recently bought a new stereo system for my 86 that is decent. I got a sony set up that has a plug in for an aux item. The sound is close to CD...but not the same. Its still good althought you can tell the difference if you have the ear. If you dont, then its perfect. All up to your sound preferences.

I own a Alpine and a Sony and don't like the sound quality of either when attaching a ipod\mp3. My Alpine is hard wired through the back and the sony has a headphone jack in the front. The problem is that the ipod\mp3 file is compressed and does not have as good as quality as a CD. Another problem is Ipod\mps players don't reproduce all the frequincies origionally on the track, ipods can only go as low as 50hz but our ears sense\hear down to 30hz. If you have a decent system you will hear a big difference. I like the sound of the ipod\mp3 through the Alpine the best because of its MX "media expander" button option, it enhances mp3 playback and simulates some of the lost sound. That said, I still won't use the ipod, the 12 disk changer still has a home with me.

I just bought a new Pioneer DEH-P5000UB with the Ipod support through USB. The sound is awesome on it! Can't tell the difference between it and a CD. I've got the 80GB classic nowhere near full - I think I only have 2200 or so songs on it. The only problem I have with it is finding a certain song I want quickly. Also, every time I plug it into the car it starts with the same song every time - the first one in alphabetical order.

It might sound "awesome" but it definatly does not sound as good as a CD, it is technically impossible. You can simulate the sound lost in the mp3 compression process but you will never actually reproduce it. Test for yourself on any decent audio system(any brand including pioneer) and you will hear the difference, especially if you have good speakers.

with an auxilary device you will only be able to put out tones on the low end into the 50-60 HZ range, the best bass that you feel comes in the 20-40 range around 30hz is where you hear it.
