(This thread is actually a follow-up to a previous thread entitled "stereo and speaker upgrades." I wanted a new thread title so I did it this way.)
So I finally got my backordered headunit from Crutchfield on Friday. I got a double din JVC model. I already had four Infinity Reference series 5x7 speakers so I replaced the 6x8s with those. My husband and I spent about eight hours on Saturday and got it all done. Sounds great--I love it!
Regarding the many conversations that were had with how to reduce the voltage of the headunit from 12 volts to 5 volts to keep the subs from popping, an installer at a local shop told us to try this: buy (from Radio Shack) one 1K ohm resistor (1/2 watt) and wire it into the amp turn on lead. We did that and it worked great initially. Shortly afterward though, the sub started occassionally popping (not as loud as before though), when I turn the car off. I can live with that! (I took pix if you'd like to see them.)
Thank God for Crutchfield's install sheet (although they do leave a couple of little details out here and there)!! We'd have been lost without it.
I thought the sub in my driver's door was rattling.....turns out, it's actually part of the door that rattles--the piece that the window switches are on. I'll have to figure out what to do about that....
And I'm going to have to correct myself here. Over the course of the last three days, my sub has NOT popped at all. I think it only happened once or twice on the day we installed it.
So the 1K ohm resistor totally fixes that problem!
check to see if te resistor is over heating, ifthe number calculations are not close to correct it can cause some intermittented things.

The pop at shutoff is "normal" according to everyone I spoke to, and has something to do with the input signal being terminated before/as the subwoofer amp powers off.
But other than that, those 5x7s fit good, don't they

Yes, sir, those 5x7s fit just hunky dory fine! I freaking LOVE my new system!! It sounds awesome and is plenty loud enough!
Also, my new headunit has a USB port. Last night I loaded up 2.25 GBs on my 4 GB memory stick. It's great to have ALL my music together in one place. Best thing ever invented!!!
