Default Aftermarket alternator and Subs Help 1987 Mustang LX

I have an 1987 lx with aftermarket radio and speakers. Im thinking about putting in 1 or 2 12 inch subs with an Amp. Im not to sure what kind all the subs and amp are because im getting them from a buddy. I went to advance auto parts to see if my alternator was working because my car died and it seemed like it was not working. The guy there said it might be my Voltage regulator which is around 60 bucks. The same as a new stock alternator. Do i need an aftermarket alternator for the subs and amp? If so how much will it run me and what kind should i look into getting? Sorry its so long. Any help would be appreciated.

To push a set of 12's takes a little bit of an amp, and that'd tax your charging system. I'd recommend bypassing all the "eek by" tactics and go for the throat... either a 130 amp or even a 200 amp alternator by PA Performance. If you go with a stock alternator, your lights will dim everytime the bass hits, even more the louder you turn it up. You'd do well to get a 1 farad capacitor too to compliment this setup. The 130 amp alternator runs around $199, the 200 amp is $289, and both can be had with cast or polished housings. I know it's a little expensive at one time, especially should you throw in the capacitor which will be around $100, but you shouldn't have any issues later on.

If the decision comes between a capacitor and a better alternator, surely go with the alternator. Capacitors are good for peak hits, but the alternator will give you more regular power and a better sound all in all.

Since you are in an LX make sure you measure the enclosure before you buy it. They don't to seem to have much trunk space, and a ported box can get rather large.

The only downside to the high output alternator is that it reduces your hp more than a stock unit because HO alts are harder to spin. I would install the system first and then make the decision. Simple test: start car, turn on headlights, blast your system. If your headlights dim your charging system is not sufficient. If you headlights stay steady you don't need anything. Another thing to consider is that the alt only helps when the car is runnung. Being that we drive Mustangs and love our hp I decided to use a 1.5 farad Capacitor. It solved all my charging issues with no hp loss and only cost about $20.

Depending on how many watts your amp will be pulling, start by upgrading the big 3 to 1/0 gauge wire. That is, add a fused connection from your alternator to battery, and unfused connections to your alternator and battery ground. This will reduce power loss due to resistance and will be your cheaper option to start.
