Default Possibly looking into Aftermarket head unit for Mustang. Help please!

Hey guys,

My cd player is about to bite the dust. I would like to change possibly to an aftermarket Fosgate..something of that nature. But I do have one problem tho. The guy who does my audio installs says since I have the Mach 460 I have to bypass the amps and use the CD player as my amp. Do this I believe the system will sound like crap without the 3 amps pushing. He also said the reason being is because you cant have a Pre-Amp output throwing amps into the factory amps, said it would fry em...Can any help me on this? And where do I get the plugs to go from my New cd player to the factory harness? Please post some links to some stuff I should be looking into!!!

Thanks!

I've changed my head unit to an aftermarked JVC deck and I had to buy a $50 wiring harness that I got from the local stereo shop. I talked to a Kicker speaker representative and learned that when you change to an aftermarket head unit your speakers will more than likely give up within a few years. The head unit sends out a much clearer signal and it is to much the factory speakers and they will eventually give up. It's best to plan to buy aftermarket speakers as well and use the head unit amp to power the new speakers instead of the mach 460 amps. The only speaker you should need an external amp for would be a subwoofer. You should be able to hit the car audio sites and ask questions to the techs there. I haven't changed the speakers in my car yet. I have had an aftermarket head unit for about three years and have lost use of 3 going on 4 speakers now. Here's one site that might help.

Go with a panasonic head unit they make the best head units. As far as speakers go i have 4 6by 9s i'll sell for 20 a pair plus shipping. If you are wanting to go with some subs go with JL audio or kicker i wouldnt mess with fosgate. They blow easy and dont sound as good as alot of the others speakers. Let me know what you want to do i have some good stuff you might want to look into that i am selling for cheap. (its all used tho)

Actually what I've found with CD players is you get what you pay for. How much are you looking to spend? You can find a nice Kenwood, Alpine, or Panasonic for 150-200 bucks if thats how much you were wanting to spend. As far as aftermarket speakers, I HIGHLY recommend INFINITY. Yes I realize they are some expensive speakers, but I've got 4 5x7s in my 98 and they put out some very very nice sound off of the head unit. Now if you would have an aftermarket head, and speakers, you can put out some serious sound. As for Subs, JL W3's are the way to go. They cost about 220 per sub but they hit very very nice. Pair those with a nice head, some infinity's and 500-1000 watt amp (depending if you want one or 2 subs) and you'll be heard! Check out Car Toys they do an excellent job in helping you out with determining what you need and what you want for your car. Just make sure you don't get a salesperson who thinks you have 6x9's unless you have them already. Most mustangs have 5x7-6x8 openings for speakers. If you go with 6x9's you have to have a custom job. for 2 pairs of speakers they were talking about 500 with the custom job. Just wanted to let you know.

If you do go with w3's make sure you dynamate your car or soon it will be rattaling apart. As for the speaker sizes i have had 3 mustangs and all three took 6.9's.

I have the Sony M630 head unit. It's a black face unit that flips open. It's cool as hell. As for speakers you get what u pay for. I have Boston Coustic. Very nice speakers. Just go to the local car audio place and see what they got. Just don't buy from them (way to expensive). then go to Best Buy or Circuit city and make your purchase. You could also try Crutchfield.
