Question Older amplifier Question

I have three amps in my car (don't ask me why, I bought the car that way) One MTX Blue thunder Pro 504 for my front and back speakers, one MTX Blue thunder Pro 752 for my Left subwoofer, and one MTX Blue thunder Pro 1502 for my Right subwoofer. My subwoofers are 12" Kove duel voice coil, duel 4 ohm rated for 250V rms.

I have looked everywhere for wiring diagrams for the subwoofer amps, since I would like to possibly bridge one amp (the 1502, rated at 300W @ 4 ohm bridged) and run both subs on one amp instead of two. I figure it would save my alternator some work. Is this even smart? I'm new to car audio sound systems, and my electronics is a little rusty. If I understand right I'll cut my total impedance in half if I run my subs in parallel. Since the amp is rated @ 4 ohms bridged, will I be putting too much strain on the amp?

If you guys think bridging my amp would be a smart plan, could someone help me out with the wiring? since these amps are so old (1998) the second channel isn't inverted, at least thats what I read. What do I need to get to invert the second channel? and how would I wire it?

Thanks for any help!

Default What the car audio guy said...

Just talked to a guy in an audio shop, he said those amps are bridge-ready. So I don't need to do anything to invert the signal. He did say it would make sense to go to a 1000 watt amp to power both of my 250 watt subs since about 30% of the power consumption per amp goes into powering the amp itself, it would be less curent draw on my battery if I just have one amp.

He also gave me some tips on tuning my system, sounds pretty extensive. That should keep me busy this weekend

Basically what you need to do is run your subs in a series/parallel configuration in order to achieve a single 4ohm load to run one amp on both subs safely. Pick the amplifier that will feed your Koves the most power bridged at 4ohm mono and let'er rip! Koves can handle a pretty good amount of power so dont be afraid to pour the coals to them. Just be careful of clipping the signal. That will kill a speaker no matter how much power he can handle.

Another route you could take is to sell your two amps you have running your subs and get a class d subwoofer amp that is much more efficient and will put less stress on your electrical system. With what you have, I would get an amp that is 1ohm stable and wire all four voice coils in parallel. Hi Fonics has some good amps for this and are reasonably priced on ebay.

Default Thanks!

I actually ordered a 1000W sony xplod 2 channel amp before I read your post about the type of amp. I'm going to try it and see how it works out, hopefully I can get my money back by selling the two current amps (I spent $80 on the xplod, including shipping)
Thanks for the info though
