Default can I just swap out head units?

My local "best buy" told me that I do not need to do a complete R&R on my audio system to improve it.Do a quick head unit swap and it will greatly improve my sound quality? is this true I was told that on a 2003 GT with a 460MACH system it will require all pieces to be changed as the system is a 6ohm load and a aftermarket head unit will be 4ohms? So if i can just swap out head units and do speakers later this will be a lot easier on the wallet and allow me to make better choices overall.I do want it to all work properly with the existing wiring harness and not sound like bubbas hoop dee

Default Mach 460 sound system

Doesn't the Mach 460 have an amplifier on the door speakers? if it does, the amp takes all the load of the speakers. So it doesn't matter what head unit you put in it, you just have to make sure you get a wiring harness that integrates the amp. If you don't have an amp or you can't get a harness to integrate it it just means that with the 6 ohm speakers they take more power to put out the same volume as 4 ohm speakers, but an aftermarket head unit has more wattage anyway.

Don't know about a 03, but on my 95 whenever you replace the factory head unit with an aftermarket one you have to install a oem amplifier adapter. bought mine from crutchfield for about $40.

go to crutchfield.com they will hook you up, most head units will work, id say go with an alpine deck you will need a single din deck
