Default 2002 Mustang Stereo Head Unit Replacement

I just recently purchased a new head unit for my 2002 Ford Mustang GT (Convertible). This was, of course before I did research to install it. The unit I purchased was a VR3 VRCD400-SDU from Wal-Mart:

Walmart.com: Virtual Reality Sound VR3 CD Player w/ USB and Scan Disk Inputs: Auto

I did some research to find out how to remove the factory radio (6 CD) first. When I removed it, I noticed 3 plugs on the back of the factory radio, and the antenna cable plugged in on the opposite side. My Mustang has Mach audio. I'm not sure how to tell if it's Mach 1000 or whatever, so some guidance on that would be great as well.

Anyways...I'm somewhat low in the money department, so I'm trying to make this as affordable as possible. I was looking at wiring harnesses, and I think I may need something similar to the Scosche FDK8B:

Scosche FDK8B Ford Premium / JBL Wiring Harness - eBay (item 230084610614 end time Aug-19-08 18:54:52 PDT)

I'm just assuming this since there are three plugs plugged into the factory radio, and other wiring harnesses contain only one or two plugs. I'm kind of at a dead end as of right now, so any help as to what parts I will need and how to install this new head unit will be greatly appreciated.

I look forward to any help you can provide. Thanks!

Thumbs up

hey, nice new head unit! Definitely DO NOT CUT INTO THE FACTORY WIRING!!!!! Instead, you can get an adapter that goes from your factory wiring directly into the new after market stereo you bought - check with Circuit City's automotive stereo dept. If they don't have one for your particular unit (they probably won't), you can still get an adapter that plugs into your factory wiring on one end and then is open ended wiring on the other. Call these guys and tell them what you have and they can probably tell you exactly what you should purchase in the way of connectors/adapters:

70-5519 amp integration harness 4 new stereo;

Also, check out pages 6 and 7 of the following PDF. These diagrams are for '94-'99 but I think the connectors on your '02 aren't any different. This should give you a good understanding of the connector going to the AMP on your Mach system. If you get the adapters that plug into these that have wires open ended on the other end, you can splice in without touching your car's original factory wiring - MUCH better than splicing directly in:

Hey, nice new stereo you've got there! I highly recommend you DO NOT cut into the car's original factory wiring. You're definitely on the right track with the adapters. Check pages 6 and 7 of the following PDF. They apply to the '04 to '99 - I think your car uses a 16 pin instead of the small black 8 pin shown in the picture, but this should give you the basic idea:

Check with circuit city's automotive audio dept. to see if they have 1 pin adapter that plugs into the factory wiring connectors. If they don't, I'm certain you can get what you need from the following website. I would just call them directly and tell them about your car and what you need, but I think this is the right one for your '02:

70-1771 plugs into car wire harness 4 new stereo;

Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

you need the FDK13B from Scoshe. This will allow you to integrate the mach 460 amps.

The big rectangular plug runs the four tweeters and that is also power and ground.

The small square plug(8 pins) runs to the mach amps which run the four mid-range speakers.

Hope this helps.
