It's a pretty common problem that happens to those models. You have a couple of options. Starting from Disc 6 Hit load and 6 but don't give it a disc. When it is done and waiting for a disc go to Disc 5 and so on all to disc 1. You may have to do this procedure 1 or 2 times more.
It just get's stuck and needs to work it self back into position. After that it'll work fine for a while.

Try disconnecting your negative battery post for about 20 minutes. I had the same problem with mine. worked long enough to retrieve my CDs then read error again. Its in a landfill somewhere now.

I have a 2002 ragtop. 6 cd changer is sitting on kitchen counter! I just had it replaced with a $139 dollar radio which sounds better, has MP3 input for my Zune. Consumer reports has a big black mark on Ford audio. Tape Drive in my Grand Marquis is junk as well.... Thats where the next after market radio is going.... I love my FoMoco products, including my F350 but I'm swapping out all the radios..... Now that it is disconnected, how do I get my CD's out??
