Default What do I need to know before I install in a mustang shaker system?

Hey guys, my manager has a 2005 v6 mustang, and since he has questions repeatedly I guess I'm going to be using this site a lot since he doesn't want to lol.
Anyways, he bought a Pioneer navigation touch screen he wants installed but I've heard things about the Shaker 500 system that may be an issue, what exactly do I need to know? I hear that I need a separate harness to make it work (I have done many car audio installs before and I am certified, but never for mustangs)

Also I understand that since it's a navigation system, it disables the functionality until you stop and pull your handbrake. Is there any way to disable this? I've used varying methods on other cars such as grounding to the antenna, but I hear that won't work for the mustang

As much help as I can get would be appreciated, thank you guys

The main problem is going to be if you keep your Shaker 500 subwoofers and connect their amp to the remote output on your head unit. The input on those amp's remote turn on from the factory HU is +5v and all aftermarket decks send a +12v signal through the remote turn on. You will need to get a +5V Fixed-Voltage Regulator 7805 from Radio Shack to eliminate that horrible turn on and turn off BOOM from the factory door subs.

There is a seperate harness, aside from the main radio harness that is used to provide line output signal to your Shaker 500/1000 factory subwoofer wiring. Basically it is a snap harness that converts the Subwoofer out RCA to the signal wiring for the Shaker 500/1000 subwoofers.

As for the nav system, you could always do a toggle switch to ground (with a DIODE if you connect the parking brake wire too), but I recommend that you look to see if there is a bypass for that particular unit. Also, some Pioneers go off of your speed in the GPS program to limit functionality. Once you hit 15 MPH or more, it will lock you out or stop playing DVD video. I don't condone watching videos while driving, but having the nav lockout can suck if you need to make a quick adjustment.

So is the only issue with the amp is that the remote is different voltage, he doesn't seem too worried about the boom, will it work fine without the regulator?

I assume then that this is the separate harness you were talking about in your second paragraph as well am I correct? 2005 2006 Ford Mustang Radio Wiring Harness Shaker 500 - eBay (item 330236496049 end time Jan-09-09 19:11:59 PST)

Also his pioneer system surprisingly doesn't have DVD, i think there's an upgrade to get it though. I'm not 100% clear on the parking brake thing either, the back of the head unit has a parking brake wire on it, would the toggle switch to ground simply disable the ground and therefore it would be able to run while driving? If so isn't the ground often required just for the head unit to function?

Yep that is the harness.

I don't want to tell you too much more due to the possible legal issues, and I probably already told you too much.

I will say this though, some units require that you set the parking brake, release the parking brake, and set the parking brake again in order to grant access to changing the GPS destinations.

Other units will come up with an error message if you just flat out ground the parking brake wire!

Finally, some will use the GPS speed sensor and still lock you out of being able to do anything while in motion.

Lastly, I suggest that you ask your questions **HERE** with the specific model number you are trying to install.
