Default 2005 Mustang.SubWoofer set up

I have the shaker 500 sound system and would like to get Subs for my mustang. I am thinking two 12", though my brother said that one 12" would be more then enough. I was wondering if any of you had installed a sound system. If you have please list what you got and how much it cost. Any input would appreciated. Thanks

Audio seems to be my area of expertise, or how ever you spell it. I have a pretty monsterous set up in my trunk. I haven't got any pics yet.
But i have to MA Audio tens with 250 oz magnets. Thats bigger then most twelves and makes them hit ridiculously hard. They handle 500 watts RMS and 1000 peak. I got both brand new on ebay for 189. The part number is HK100XC. (Try them you won't be dissappointed).
The amp i have to match is a Hifonics brutus 1208D. Its a digital amp and provides a hundred more watts then the subs are rated for however the subs can handle the amp wide open. In fact the MA Audio show cars overpower their subs. Anyway it cost about 200 on ebay new.
Lastly I got a 3f capacitor. You only need a 1.5f but i overdid. Brands on capacitors don't really matter.
I also have custom boxes in the corners of my trunk that cost 250. All in all after buying wires and install hardware and going through two or three different boxes about 1000.
But if you did it right the first time and didn't intend to change it you could get my set up for about 500.

JL 13.5" W6
Custom box
800watt Kenwood
Build: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2371146/2
Spent about $500 total, and almost all of that was on the subwoofer.

I really like both of your set ups especially yours omaharacer. Do you still have the measurements to make it? I would like the amp. to be adjustable. So I'll have to steer clear off the one you got. I was hoping to pay like $300 though so I guess I'll start saving up.

I don't have any of the measurements anymore. The cardboard "template" was torn apart shortly after those pix were taken. I would suggest doing the same thing though, just grab some spare cardboard and a tape measure and start getting something together. Most of the work goes into building the box. You could make one a lot simpler than mine and it would still look/sound just as good. A sheet of MDF will run you about $20-30 + screws, carpet, and spray adhesive. Take your time and get the measurements right the first time.

I think I will go with a 12" not a 13.5" though because they're cheaper and easier to find. I have a question for you guys, I was wondering what the difference between a mono channel , 2 channel and 4 channel amp. is. And is any brand better then another? Also I have the shaker 500 so should I try to get a 500 watt amp. or one that can handle more power? Thanks for all your help guys

You should get an amplifier to match your subwoofer. A 12" or 10" size is the most common for a subwoofer. The "channel" on an amplifier is how many inputs/outputs it will have. For example, a 1 channel /or "mono" amplifier should only be used to run one subwoofer. A 4 channel amplifier could power two left speakers and two right speakers in your car with independent output settings for each speaker.

Although you must remember to match the resistance from the subs voice coils to the amps. Some amps will let you bridge both subs for more power. Thats how mine is done. But you gotta be careful not to blow up your amp if it won't work.
Also I would suggest that if you want to get the most out of your set up and you only want one sub make a bandpass box. If you do it right you can get a few extra dBs.

What is a Bandpass box? I was planning on making a box similar to omaharacer's, could I make what he make into a bandpass box? Also besides wires a sup and an amp. is there anything else I need? And could I use the amp. you have just for just one of the subs you got or would I need to run 2 subs to use that amp.? Thanks for all your help so far I know almost nothing about sound system

A bandpass is a box with two compartments. One is sealed and the other is vented. If you make them right they will really add some punch to your subs.
