Default Speaker system setup for my 90 stang

Hey everyone, im looking to upgrade my sound system in my 1990 stang convertible 2.3l.

I have 6 speakers, 2 in-dash, 2 front speakers, 2 back...

Front: 6.5"
Back: 6" x 8"

Does it matter what brand i get for the front/back speakers? I hear Alpine and JL audio are both good brands. Do people generally buy the same make for there fronts and backs? To be honest this whole thing is confusing, i was told to check out hifisoundconnection.com to get the speakers, decent priced compared to most.

Can anyone suggest what i should do about new speakers? Im not looking to get a sub for now, just new speakers, amp a bit later as well...one last thing, when people get new sound systems in this type of car do they unplug the in-dash speakers? it would seem pointless for them to be on, especially with tweeters.

Thanks all

Brands dont really matter too much if you arent into competition. Any aftermarket speaker would be an upgrade. It is very simple really. I would DEFINITELY replace the factory head unit and run all new wires to the new speakers. If the dash speakers arent blown, wouldnt hurt to keep them as they add midrange to vocals reflecting off the windshield. Dash speakers are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace if you are inclined to do so.
If you arent sure of what you are getting into, just like any other mod... let a professional (or even intermediate) stereo enthusiast do the install for you. It is pretty basic and should not cost more than $200. Good luck and ADD A SUB!!!

thanks for the advice, i definitly will add a sub, what im looking to do FOR NOW is just get 4 new speakers, maybe even new speaker wire like you said, from there i will get an amp and sub.

Thats another thing, when i go to buy an AMP, what do i look for? all i see are words like mono/2way/4way blah blah makes no sense to me...for a 4 speaker set up + 1 or 2 subs in the back, what kind of amp/power will i need?

and any examples of what you all have would be great

Alpine MRP-F550 4-Channel Audio Speaker Amplifier
This amp is premium for what you want. The biggest thing is to make sure that your speakers can handle the amp's wattage! Again, just like engine or suspension mods, you want to design your stereo around what you are going to use it for. If only for moderate to loud volume personal enjoyment, running the speakers off of a good head unit (no amp needed) is a good option. If you are going to compete... go with amps, amps, and more amps.
Here is an example of a good head unit that will power any door/rear deck speakers with ample power.
Sony CDX-GT52W CD / MP3 player W/ Front Aux Input

Sorry... almost forgot. The amp you asked about is a sub amp and only two channel. Good amp for low power subs, but not a great choice for doors and deck.

Alright cool man thanks, im starting to get the hang of this, what I think im gonna do is just power the new speakers through my head unit. No need to compete with anyone lol. After that maybe get a 10" sub or something like that with an amp for it.

The head unit im using now is a Sony like that one, what im gonna do is just go to Futureshop i guess and take a look at there pioneer speakers :P Im not even sure what the future for this car is, so just some new speakers to replace the stock ones should be good and a sub for a little boom boom

Thanks mdps1254 appreciate your help

Ya I bet eh, I just placed an order through hifisoundconnection.com for a couple Pioneer 4way 260w speakers, read some reviews and they sound perfect for me, the price for 2 with shipping to me in canada was just a few pennies over $100. Im gonna hit futureshop and get a couple Pioneed 6.5" 2way 160w speakers, i usually throw a bit more sound to the rear speakers, its gonna be sweet =) sub and amp later down the road

speakers mentioned:

Pioneer TS-A6881R Car Audio 4-Way 6x8 5x7 Speaker Pair

Future Shop: Car & Marine Electronics: Car Audio Speakers: Pioneer 6 1/2" 2-Way Speaker (TS-G1642R)
