Anyone have experience removing a Shaker 500 (2005 GT) and installing a new double din head unit such as the JVC AVX820? I 've ordered the new head unit and should have it by Tuesday.
Any tips or shortcuts will be greatly appreciated.
Also, can anyone recommend a good wiring harness that I can pick up to help with the install. I believe I'll need a voltage regulator to avoid speaker pop from connecting with the existing amp.

Professional installer. Unless you have done this before or it just plugs right in, I'd go pro.
I have installed regular headunits, but when i saw how many wires mine had and having to slice some wires i said $99 install at bestbuy is the way to go. Hell the guy even showed me how to use it and tweak the settings. Matched my colored buttons to my gauges. lol

I bought wiring harness aftermarket unit adapter from Crutchfield, and installed mine myself. But I have done many many stereo's over the years.
The unit itself comes out easily.
2 screws in the back of the center console storage, lift it, then pop the 2 spring clips in the front. The sides of the center dash console just snap out after that.
Then you have the exposed screws that hold the entire center console faceplate on, remove that, unhook the A/C button connectors and stuff.
Then remove the 4 radio support bolts, and it's out.
Hardest part for me is reconnecting the A/C connector, mine is a short lead with not much room to get my hand on there to snap it on.
If you are keeping the stock subwoofers, you will need a Radio Shack type 7805 5 volt voltage regulator. It is pretty straight forward to install the voltage regulator inline. Take the amplifier remote turn on from the aftermarket radio then wire that to the + input on the regulator, ground the regulator to the vehicle or radio harness ground, then use the output from the regulator as the amplifier turn on for your stock subwoofer amplifiers.
I also have the radio/speaker replacement instructions for a 2005-2006 Mustang GT in PDF format. PM me your email address if you want it.

Installation was a success. I will try to post pics this weekend.
It did not start well because BestBuy gave me the wrong wiring harness, which I did not test until I had already soldered it to the JVC harness. I also forgot to get the dashkit. Once I got the correct wiring kit and dash kit (both for $38), the install went very smooth.
The postings on the voltage regulator were right on and very helpful, so no pop when the unit turns on.
I also upgraded the door and rear deck speakers while I was at it with Kenwood 3-way 5x7s from Crutchfield. The rear deck speakers were the toughest because of the limited room between the back glass and rear deck.

Congrats dude, can't wait to see some pictures. How do those speakers sound compared to the stockers?? Any links for all the speakers?

Alright, here are some pics of the new head unit. 7" touchscreen looks great in the Mustang. Built in bluetooth is very convenient. I was able to run the included USB cable under the center console trim and into the storage bin under the armrest.
The speakers I went with were Kenwood KFC-C5782ie from Crutchfield. I chose these because of the good reviews I found and the affordable price $69. The speakers are a big improvement over the stock speakers, especially the highs and mids. As others have commented, the bass is not really strong, which is fine for me.
