I tried testing it by grounding the headunit to the ground wire for my subwoofer amp...but it didnt work. I'm hoping that doesn't mean I have a bigger problem.
Ahh, so you have an aftermarket sub and amp too? The plot thickens. The first thing I would do is, "un-ghetto" the wiring. Then I would look at the size, quality and condition of the amp power cable and signal wiring (speaker wires). Then I would make sure all the signal wiring is as far away as possible from the amp power cable. I've heard of instances where that can cause a problem. You may also have a ground loop problem. In that case, you might try a ground loop isolator like the one seen here (ES-034 ).
Its a start I guess.

Oh I think I might need one of those...things. But speaking of the plot thickening, this is bizarre. When I bought the car it didn't have this problem, then I had the subs installed and it started. I brought the car back to the audio place and they told me it was the amps. Later I had the car's a/c system tested and after I got it back from the shop the noise was gone, but it came back in a couple of days.

Then I'm almost convinced you have a ground loop problem. Assuming your sub amp is wired in using the RCA connectors, here's what I'd do. Go to your hometown wal-mart and buy a Scosche ground loop isolator (GLI). I think they're around $12. Disconnect the RCA plugs from the sub amp and plug the GLI into the amp, then plug the RCAs into the GLI. Should take about one minute. If it doesnt fix the problem, take it back to walmart. But I would almost bet it will.

Ok now this is getting annoying. I tried the ground loop isolator, it didn't work. Also, I took the fuse out of the power cable to my sub amp to see if it was interference from that and it wasn't. Now I'm running out of solutions.

Can you tell where they tapped into when they connected the sub amp? While the speakers are buzzing, disconnect the RCA plug or plugs going into the sub amp and see if that makes a difference.
Also, how did he wire the headunit in? Did he use the RCA jacks on the back of the unit?

The sub amp is connected through the rca jacks on the headunit. He bought an adapter and wired the mach speakers into the normal output. I already disconnected the sub amps and its power and it didn't do anything.

So you basically disconnected the sub amp from the system? You took the fuse out thats good, disconnect the RCAs from the headunit, ok. Did you disconnect the sub amp ground? If you did that then the sub amp cant be the problem.

I have everything to the subs disconnected except the remote wire, so the power, ground, and input are gone...and the buzzing remains. I'm starting to think there's a problem with the car and not the audio system.

I agree. I don't know how big your sub amp is but if it's big enough, it could have damaged the alternator. You could disconnect the accessory belt for a few seconds (with the engine cold of course) and see if the problem goes away. Where is your amp power wire tapped in?

It's an 800 watt 2-channel amp and the power wire is run from the battery terminal. I'll check the alternator because someone else just told me they had a similar problem and it happened right before the alternator went out.

The same thing pretty much happened to me with my old 1998 5.0. I replaced the 2 front speakers with Alpine speakers and within 2 days it blew my factory amp.

How difficult was that engine swap?
Btw this thread is 5 years old.
