Problem after installing after market radio, blown fuses Hello, this is my first post I have sent this email im about to paste to a lot of people and had little to no responses on this issue. Here is the email i sent....
I have bought 4 products from crutchfield and had
little to no problems with either the order or
products I have placed/recieved. I recently reffered
......, a close friend, who purchased 4
Infinity Speakers and 1 Kenwood mpv head unit. I have
also referred ....., and many more customers. Upon installation of
the head unit I noticed that the instructions I
recieved were lacking, the page containing the amp
location within the car was absent and the other pages
containing instructions on door panel removal were for
the incorrect model. The car is a 2000 Ford Mustang
Coupe without the Mach Radio system. I called
crutchfield with the order number and the tech was
able to instantly inform me that the amp was located
directly beneath the radio. I soldered all the correct
wires together and plugged in all the proper
harnesses, I turned the car on and tested the unit,
everything functioned properly tuning, sound quality,
cd play, etc. After this i turned the car off and
began placing the radio and din piece into the dash.
Once completed I turned the car back on and the head
unit did not function. I then removed the head unit
only to find that the 10 amp fuse located on the back
was blown. I replaced this fuse and plugged it back
in, i head the motor click on, but once i turned the
car on it stopped working. Thinking there was a short
i again removed the radio but saw that the fuse was
ok, I checked the interior radio fuses, but these
again were ok. I then looked at the main power
distribution fuses underneath the hood and discovered
that the 10 amp radio fuse was blown, I replaced this
and turned the car back on, the radio worked , but the
speakers sounded very distorted and only 2 of them
worked. The fuses never blew again and I contacted
tech support again by phone and they informed me that
the radio was bad. My question is what could have
caused this? I want to be sure that this does not
happen again, the tech said it was a bad radio, but
what i didnt understand was why it worked ok in the
first place and shorted twenty minutes later, I
checked and rechecked all wires. They were all
properly soldered and wrapped to avoid shortages.
Perhaps this radio was defective and had a short
within itself? I thought perhaps the speakers were
blown by the short so I installed 1 infinity speaker
into the front passenger door, 1 of the 2 speakers
that was functioning. I turned the radio back on and
had the same problem this was when I got the return
number. After placing the factory radio back in all
speakers functioned properly. I know that the radio
did go bad, but what can i do to avoid this
possibility again? I realize I do not currently have
the order number at this moment but I was hoping that
I could get a response seeing as how you can verify
the customer name, their order contents, and the fact
that we are returning this item. At the very least I
am assuming that tech support will be able to refer to
this email tommorow when I call so they can better
read the situation.
Thanks and regards,
