A novice can get himself into a lotta trouble, if he/she doesn't havea clue how to manipulate the tools required for the task. However, if you wish to proceed.....
Doors ain't a safety concern so long as they latch and lock properly. As long as you don't disable those two items, you should be o.k. on this project.
My advice concerning the cost would be to go to a salvage yard and get two doors with the power items already contained. Then you'd have the interior trim parts necessary (completely different from Armstrong windows) as well as the wiring and switches and solenoids and and and. These would cost NO WHERE NEAR $3k. You could add a part a day, and be done in a week, keeping your stock doors in place all the while.
Course the other idea would to be to bolt the "new" doors on the car and have them repainted.....less work always equals more expense.
