Default no charge condition, HELP!!!

1966 ford mustang, inline 6, automatic. i've replaced the voltage regulator and alternator and i've checked over the wiring which appears to be in good condition. the ammeter also does not work, but even if i just put a piece of wire in its place, it still won't charge. there's 4 posts on the back of my alternator, but only 3 go to anything: stator(not hooked to anything), field(goes to the voltage regulator), battery(goes to positive side of battery), and ground(double wire, one goes to the engine block, the other goes to the voltage regulator). can somebody tell me if this is where the wires should go and what could be causing this to not charge? if i hook up the field directly to the battery, it'll charge at full capacity(about 16 volts) so i know it works, i'm just wondering if things are wired correctly. any help would be great, thank you.
