Default desgning my audio system

Ok, guys, I need your advice. I wanna totally redo my 1985 GT's sound system. I already have a Pioneer DEH-5800MP headunit, and I have an IDEA of what I want to with the rest.

What I'm looking for is suggestions, recommendations, or just plain advice. I'm new to the stereo scene and I just want to know if this system will work and how the sound will be. Thanks guys!

2x Pioneer TS-G1341R for the dash
2x Pioneer TS-G1641R for the rear
Will I need a 4-channel amp for these speakers or will the headunit handle them fine? How will this sound? I wanted to do some more powerful speakers and a 4-channel amp, but I am trying to save on cost.

And Best Buy has an offer: Pioneer Car Audio Package: 800W Amp, Two 12" Subs & Sub Box for the trunk. Will that fit in there?

I'm also planning on having Best Buy do the installation. Wise?

What do you think?

Sorry for all the questions, but I really know nothing about car stereos.
Thanks again!

Sounds like you are off to a good start with those speakers. Check on ebay for a better deal. I got 4 TS-A6871R 3-way's for $130 including shipping. Best Buy is a bit overpriced when compared to ebay. You may be able to get better speakers for the same price. Go ahead and get the 4 channel amp. Depending on what you want to do, you can run one or two sets of RCA cables to the amp. It won't really make a difference in the long run as most Pioneer HU's have 3 outputs. Just run them to the correct preout as per the wiring diagram.

I would personally do the install myself. It can be a headache, but it is a cool learning experience, you'll appreciate the stereo more if you do it yourself, and it isn't as hard as you might think. As far as the sound package, you might want to check around first. Consider your trunk space as some companies make custom boxes that are discreet in the trunk and save you space. One 12" should be fine, but it depends on your bass needs.

Reference these boards for install help and you should be fine. I'm no expert, but I've screwed up enough to know what not to do.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know if the speakers I chose will fit where I want them to go? Will the subwoofer(s) take up the entire trunk? I have a hatchback where the back seats can fold down, if that makes a difference.

Take some measurements in your trunk to see what you can fit and it will still hold whatever else you need it to hold. I had a buddy with an 88 GT and he fit 3 10"s back there, so you should be fine. You may even want to go with a custom setup to save a bit of space. Take a look at the factory speakers to get an idea of what size you need to replace them. You can mount your amps on the back of the seats provided they aren't too big (my seats won't close because of the size of the amps I have).

Since I'm someone who always changes his mind....here is a new setup for you guys to analyze. I worked on this one today in school.

2 Infinity 3-1/2" 2- Way 75 Watts Peak, 25 RMS for the dash
Do these have good sound? They are only 2 way and very small, but their are all that will fit in the dash, right?

possibly 2 Pioneer 6"x8" 4-way speakers for the rear
with a Dual 580W 2-Channel Amp to power those
Now that I look at this, the rear speakers seem very overpowered compared the the important front speakers, but I can't put anything bigger in the dash can i?

1 Pioneer 800W Mono AMP w/ crossover for the sub woofer
a pioneer 10" 600W 4 ohm subwoofer
and a Q-Logic Single 10" Sealed S/W enclosure

Any suggestions for better front speakers? Also, I would prefer not to have to use an amp for the front or rears speakers, just one for the subwoofer. My head unit can support 50 Watts per channel.

Thanks again for the advice!

I guess it wouldn't really matter about the speakers too much since the interior isn't crazy huge and you'll get all the sounds coming to you. Is that 50W RMS or peak? Make sure beforehand or your speakers will sound like crap, but yeah, you could just go straight from the HU to the speakers as long as it can handle it. Check your manual. Not my personal preference, but to each his own. That sub setup sounds sweet, considering I have a Pioneer Amp also . It is a nice sized amp though, so be aware of that when it comes mounting time. Like I said, I can't even close my backseats all the way, but it doesn't really matter since no one sits back there anyway. Sounds like a good setup, but for a real test, go by a best buy or sound store and give those speakers a listen and try to listen to music you typically listen to. Bring your own CD if you have to. They'll let you listen to it if they think it will get you to buy something. Let us know how it goes!

In the manual it says that it gives continuous power output at 22W per channel MINIMUM. Its MAX power output is 50W x 4 channels. Would it handle those speakers or would they sound crappy?

I want to save money but I don't want to skimp out on sound.

That's what I thought. That 50W is referencing the peak power that the speaker can handle. Thats for when a hard bass note hits or something like that. You want to focus on the RMS value (the continuous wattage rating). This will tell you what your speakers can handle. You can still go with that setup, but you are seriously going to underdrive your speakers and they will sound like crap. Check the specs on the amp and the speakers so you can match the impedances. For example, if it says 50W @ 4 ohms on the amp (very common), you want to make sure you get speakers that are rated at 50W @ 4 ohms. This way you don't underdrive or overdrive your speakers. Same for the sub that you want to add. There are other factors, but this is the main one. You really want to check out a 4-channel amp to maximize your speaker output. I know it will be a little bit more $$$, but it will be worth it. Imagine if your CD's sounded like the radio? Not good. Check ebay, you can get some really good deals there. Based on what you want, this should be your shopping list:

Mono Amp
4-Channel Amp
4 speakers of your choosing
10" or 12" sub
Dual amp kit
Speaker wire
Capacitor (this is more of a just in case, you shouldn't need one)
2 Distribution Blocks (one for ground and one for power; you can get away with one block for power depending on where and how you ground the amps to the car)

I know it sounds like a lot and you are looking at about $700-$1000+ depending on brands and performance. You usually get what you pay for. A lot of people like Boston Acoustic, JL Audio, Infinity, Fosgate but they are pricey. I personally have all Pioneer except for my sub which is MTX and I couldn't be happier. I paid about $700 minus the HU ($250), which I already had. It's about $600 at BB for them to do one amp and a couple of subs and it takes them like 2 hours. That is a 30-45-min install tops, especially with 2 or 3 guys. You could do the entire install in a few hours and save that money for something else. Like I said, I'm no expert, but I've screwed up enough to know what not to do. Let us know how it goes.
