Red face Disarming an alarm on 1997 Mustang GT

We recently purchased a 97 Gt with remote key access and the alarm system. The car also had a ford add on system, which was near the kick panel on the drivers side. Since we have had the car sometimes it will not connect the starter circuit. If we push it it will start. I removed the add on system and it did not change anything. I should tell you I do not think the key has the chip in it. It will not work on the doors or trunk. You have to open those with the remote. Is there a way to disable the starter circuit stop on the alarm system. I also ask why would the kep work in the ignition and not the doors? Someone change the lock or does one of the keys only work in the ignition. I really hate to take it to the dealer since a key is big bucks. Any advice wouild be appreciated. PS. I already did a search. Thanks and the the car is really cool.
