Cool Upgrading my audio? 1989 Mustang

Replacing my speakers and getting some better sound is something I'd really like to do. Problem is, I'm rather strapped these days. What is the cheapest route to putting in some good speakers (and a subwoofer preferably), and what sort of work does that entail? I have access to folks who are better with car work than I am, but I'm looking at ease of installation as well.

And it's a 1989 Mustang, as I believe my profile states.

well your gunna have 3.5 in the dash 6.5 in the doors and 6x8 in the rear. your gunna need slim mount door speakers because there is not alot of room between the speaker and the window guide. a full set is gunna run about 150. now woofers that gunna be more expensive your gunna need a deck that has RCA jacks, and an amp, all the wiring, the box, and ofcourse the woofers which you could proly get for bout 300. i have all pioneers in the car and 2 15 in. woofers of audiobahn in the hatch and it bangs!

I run 6.5 component speakers in the front 5X7's in the back. and had to make a custom box for my notchback for my 2 12's but its loud. It all depends on what you want to spend. But keep in mind you get what you pay for in audio. But if i were to say I would buy a good deck over putting in subs right way... you can always put them in later after you get more money..

Geez, those were some kinda pricey figures quoted. Mind you, I don't need super-premium or super-loud sound. My car's quiet, I just want to hear my music and get fairly good quality sound. If I replace the speakers and skip the sub, will I not need an amp etc.? I.e. if I stick with the speaker set, will I only need to wire the new speakers off the old lines?

my man, theres no need to spend millions here. I still ahve my factory 3.5 in the front, went to walmart got some 6x9 pioneer 3 ways for the back, 150 on ebay for a sweet chrome sub box, 150 for a sweet radio with hd capability, and another 100 for a 800 watt amp. I did it over time, start with a good head unit, add even onna those walmart sub packages with a 300 watt amp.- what i had at first, and ur set!

man my car is bangin man, shakes the house and plays the high like a bird

'87 factory speakers in front? Wow, impressed they've held up. I think rear speakers are my first priority, I get bad sound from the back. I was actually thinking Wal-Mart to begin with.

We'll see. Right now I'm looking for the easiest stuff to begin with.
