Question 2010+ Shaker 500 - Specs & Speaker Upgrades

Hey Fellas

I'm new to Mustangs, and even new to FORD. So excuse my ignorance.

So anyways, I have a 2011 Mustang. Came equipped with the Electronics Package ( NAV/HDD ) and the Shaker 500!!!
So the first part is, what exactly does Shaker 500 mean? What does that include or provide? I assume its a level up from base trim, but what do I get with that?

Second question is, after finding out what Shaker 500 consists of? What are my best options to upgrade the speakers? I'm not looking to go all out THUMPING DOWN THE BLOCK, I just want nicer sound inside the cabin. I'm just not sure what to replace and size of current speakers and so forth.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Once I get some help with this i'll probably hit up Crutchfield for brands etc...

the leg shaker 500 compared to a non leg shaker is that the 8in mid-bass woofers in the doors are on the 500. if you want a hair more bass go the the audio options/dsp/ and choose rear. they tend have more bass at that setting.the shelby/kicker sub for the mustangs might be the plug and play answer for more thump/the highs is a personal choice. the door subs are probably best left alone. note i do not know if the sheby/kicker upgrade setup is compatible with the 2010/2011 mustangs.

Hi -
i am in the same boat as you, i want to upgrade my speakers on my Shaker 500, but keep the factory HU, and the door "subs". So that leaves me with the front door panel and rear deck speakers (5"x7"). I just purchased 2 pairs of MB Quarts, but they are rather inefficient at 88db, so i will place them on eBay and go with a more efficient pair at more than 90 to 91 db. The higher the number on db, the more efficient (or louder) the speaker will play with lower AMP outputs. Factory AMPs tend to be lower powered so get more efficient speakers. But if you have a chance to audition them, at a shop or stereo specialist store ,do so. Always what sounds best to YOU not to the salesperson, which may have an incentive to push a certain brand. Also, listen to music you are familiar with (take your CDs'). Speakers are the hardest components to choose, but you can trust your ears. Good luck!!!

I will report back on this thread in the next few days.

I've ordered 2 pairs of Alpine 5x7 Type-R speakers. Will be replacing my door and rear shelf speakers.

I'll be leaving the factory 8" Shaker 500 subs alone.

I have an Alpine Type R 12" sub and and mono amp that I have from my previous car that I'm going to try to some how incorporate into stock headunit.

I've been told the headunit DOES provide a subwoofer output. What I'm trying to figure out is how to utilize that stock subwoofer output and convert it into RCA for my amp to utilize it.

In addition, I want to figure out if that will negatively effect the factory 2 subwoofers, as I'd like to not have to lose them.

The 5x7's will be happening within the next week.

The amp/sub will take a bit more work research so I'll report back on that as well once I've figure it out.

I'm very interested to hear about this subwoofer output. Where did you hear this from?

Working on it, I know that the back of the headunit has pins for a 'AUX' output.. which as I understand it is for a subwoofer output.

Some have said that this output is MUTED on the Shaker 500 though. and only works on the shaker 1000.

I dont know if thats accurate and its what I'm looking to find out.

Also, I know that the Shaker 500 from 05-09 models had an output that allowed for a mono sub amp from saleen to be completely plug and play.

If that line exists somewhere, especially in the 2010+ models, theres GOT to be a way to tap that signal for an aftermarket amp.

Anyone else have any information on this please help

So how'd it go?

I have a Shaker500 that I'll be beefing up with a Kenwood amp/ subwoofer.

The basic power/ ground stuff I know... I'd like to know how you managed to connect your aftermarket amp to the stock HU.

Thanks!
