Default 2011-2013 - Radio Swap (Possible NAV) - Retaining SYNC

Those of you who have swapped their stock radio's for aftermarket NAV units. I'd love to hear from you and pictures if possible.

I have a 2013 Mustang GT Base w/ Stock radio (No Sirius). I'd love to at a minimum add sirius to my radio. I have seen a few options out there but wanted to hear what everyone is using without issues or affecting the stock SYNC abilities (Bluetooth Sound, Text Reading, NAV, Car Health, etc).

Also, I am interested in adding a nav unit if possible (it looks like swapping a stock system in is a pain), so I am considering a aftermarket unit if I can find one that actually looks as if it could be stock and retains the SYNC abilities. Does anyone out there have any? If so pics would be awesome!

I'm still waiting on my 13 to arrive but I'm also getting a base and already have a touchscreen HU and 2 sets of 6x8's ready for when it gets here. You'll have to get a dash kit in order to install a new HU and there's only 3 options that I can find (see pics) and they are between $250-350. The Metra units have harnesses (sold seperately) that allow you to retain the Sync functions and the touchscreen dash kit from Metra lets you control Sync through it. There's also a harness to retain your steering wheel controls and you'll need an antenna adaptor too. If you search Metra on eBay there's a guy that sells the touchscreen Metra unit with the harness and antenna adaptor a little cheaper than if you bought them all seperately or from a store. There's also several videos on youtube with demos of the Metra touchscreen kit and it looks pretty cool. The screen is a little small but I think it looks better than the other options. There's also a kit that allows you to hook up satellite radio but you have to run the antenna from outside the car to the radio so it's a little more trouble to install. I'm just gonna use bluetooth through the radio and the SiriusSM app on my Iphone for that (I have unlimited data). It's kinda pricey to change all that out but it'll sound much better than the stock radio.

I picked up my 2013 a couple weeks ago. I didn't figure it would be this difficult to replace the stock unit. I wasn't going to pay several thousand for the premium level just to get the upgraded Shaker. Ford really isn't being user friendly not allowing a stereo upgrade by itself. I've been in touch with Scosche and though their replacement is interesting, you still have to supply the aftermarket HU. Granted, it's great for changes down the road but you no longer can use Sync. Now I'm not really enamored with Sync just yet so I may go to them and maybe use the bluetooth or sirius on an aftermarket unit. I also looked into adding my Alpine sub and amp from my previous car and it's possible but the stock radio doesn't have any subwoofer controls so have to leave it all on the amp itself.

Also, just curious, has anyone removed the rear deck speakers? Do you have to remove the rear deck to replace them or is there another way? I am hoping there is another way outside of removing the rear deck because to me, after disturbing that, things just don't seem to go back the same.

Todd,

You can keep SYNC with some head units and the Metra kit. There is a module that keeps it. I'm just waiting for a better integrated NAV unit. I know people say the stock unit sucks, but I would be willing to pay MORE to get the stock NAV Unit because of the appearance. I don't need all the speakers, I can upgrade to aftermarket when it comes to that.. I just like the stock nav unit but like you did not want to upgrade to Premium and get leather, etc just to get NAV and Satellite Radio.

There has to be some possibilities here..

Thanks for the info. I am a bit leery on the Metra after reading some threads on here about them. Scosche has been somewhat prompt in getting back to me at least. I may just start out slowly with adding my previous sub and amp then new speakers. I just don't want to also have the dash look crappy. I'm guessing more options from the aftermarket will be forthcoming.

I replaced the rears on a 2013 with Infinity 6x8s. I have a premium, but the rears are the same size as a base. They are still dual cones on the 2013 premium, by the way. Removing them isn't too bad. Look on YouTube for mustang rear speaker removal. There is a video for 05-09 rear speaker replacement. It will guide you through it. Only real difference on the 13 is the rears aren't held in by torx screws anymore. Hex bolts only now. Makes it easy to remove them with a ratchet.

Yeah, unfortunately I am not a fan of either of the two available options (Scosche and Metra). Plus the fact that you cannot have the touchscreen on top (like the factory Nav equipped mustangs) makes me very unhappy

Looking into the possibility of swapping oem nav in. I don't really mind if it's more expensive or difficult than aftermarket. I just want fully integrated.

Just need to talk to someone who is knowledgeable about how things are wired up and the modules/wiring harnesses involved that may need to be purchased.

I have tried to research finding a place to buy the OEM NAV and haven't found anyone who sells it or who has replaced their stock HU with the OEM NAV. Supposedly its nearly impossible since there is no room behind the stock HU due to ducts for ac air flow. The OEM NAV cars actually have different ducting for air flow then the stock HU. I'm not sure how true this is just something I read in trying to research a nav solution for these cars.

If anyone finds anything out for a higher up NAV solution please post it. This is something I really want to do to my ride and the other solutions do not seem practical.

I didn't see anything for the newer models. Seems to only go up to 2009.

Good Day to you Todd M - I was wondering what exact system you selected from www.acmishop.com since I can not find any for the Mustang.

I also wondered if anyone had considered the Navi-Empire FD13MG-67534GPS http://www.amazon.com/Relacement-Multimedia-Navigation-2010-2013-Navi-Empire/dp/B00BPYISFY/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=3FYVYK7HF32R X&coliid=I3UWJXULLDUPIB ?

It "appears" to have most everything. I would consider having the Ford OEM unit installed, but I can not find it ANYWHERE and I get the feeling that the dealership will not install it after the car is purchased.

ANY input(s) would be welcomed and greatly appreciated.

Seems like you posted this back in March yet I am just getting the email update on it now? I don't remember what I checked out as it was quite a while back. I do like that Navi-Empire unit though. I wonder if it has all the connections in the back along with sub woofer control.

Does anyone know if you can still buy the Navi-Empire unit or what happened with it? IMO it is the best looking option for cars without sync. Below is a link to the product on amazon.
