Default Shaker 500 Speaker upgrade

So i have upgraded the Shaker 500 Head unit to a Kenwood and was very impressed with the purchase after I tuned it to my liking. The sound quality was very good for stock. it does get loud and clear but My question was is im not very thrilled on the idea of upgrading the amp but I was wondering if anyone has an idea on the benefit of upgrading the door and rear speakers. If anyone has what brand would be a good sound or if the sound has changed at all? im looking to see if i could get a louder clearer sound with just replacing speakers. the reason why i am not wanting to change the amp is for money reasons.

Shelby makes some pretty good upgrades. Shelby Kicker Premium Sound System: Shaker Systems is a complete set, but you can get the pieces individually as well. The speakers are the KS68 Kicker KS68 6"x8" 2-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com if you want to get them from other sources.

I replaced my door and rear side panel speakers with the 68s and the door subs with the Shelby kickers. They sound pretty good, definitely an improvement over stock since the front stock speakers consist of a ~3" midrange and 1" tweeter mounted side by side in the housing and the rear at least in the convertibles is just a single 5x7 paper cone. Would probably sound even better with a new head unit like yours since the stock one actually sends more power out to the front speakers than the rear and they end up being sorta washed out even when you use the balance adjustments.

I recently installed a new head unit (pioneer DEH-X9500BHS) and some cheap $50 kenwood speakers from amazon front and rear to replace my blown door speakers (previous owner had blown them and I just lived with it until now).

The $50 speakers sound far better than stock after I tuned the head unit and at $50/pr they are very budget friendly. I do find that I have to turn the volume up higher with the aftermarket speakers since they have a higher impedance than the stock ones, but they get plenty loud. When I first installed them I did feel that the sound stage was pulled down a bit (you could tell the speakers were in the doors rather than up higher) but that might have just been due to the fact that I was actually paying attention to the speaker locations... after a few days I stopped noticing that. Otherwise the highs and mids are definitely a lot clearer than with the stock speakers, but I noticed a much more significant change before/after the head unit installation compared to before/after the speaker installation.

As for the door subs... I kept those stock for now. Once I have some more money I'll buy some aftermarket 8" subs and a proper amp for them... but that's not even a concern for now. The ones that I have in there now are more than sufficient. With the subwoofers plugged into the RCA output on the head unit I was able to set the subwoofer low pass cutoff to a reasonable level (as opposed to the shaker 500's SUPER high cutoff for the subs) and they are more than powerful enough for me (for now )

Thank you guys for your input. I really dont want to spend the money to install and re do a whole new system with amp and subs. I would have to agree with the stock subs. I have no interest as of now to change out the stock subs now with the new Head unit. This answers my question. Im not looking for a HUGE significant change obviously due not changing out the amp. but I am all about cleaning up my sound as much as possible even if it means being on a budget. Thanks alot you guys. I might look into either the shelby stuff or see what crutch field has.

I used to be HUGE into car audio. I had a system in a previous VW Jetta that was probably worth more than the car.

However, stock audio systems have improved by leaps and bounds so there is really no need to go crazy with car audio anymore. Just a few upgrades can make a stock system sound really top notch.

The only upgrade I mad to my Shaker 500 is to change out the speakers in the front and rear doors (not the subs though). I always thought the stock speakers sounded a bit harsh on some music material when played at louder volumns.

So I replaced the stockers with 4 Infinity Speakers. The Infinity's sound much smoother without sacrificing that nice high frequency detail that I like. So replacing those speakers with any good aftermarket speaker will give you noticeable improvement.

The only other upgrade I was thinking of is a powered subwoofer in the trunk. Since I have a convertible, bass response really falls off with the top down. A powered sub would help that immensely.

Yes i am hoping with just some better quality speakers and spending some tuning time with the after market deck i can make a pretty decent stereo without having to change out the amp/subs

I still to this day can not get over the fact at how impressed i am over the stock shaker system. it gets the job done. I have been looking around Crutchfield and I am leaning towards getting some Kickers. They are very nicely priced and i have friends that swear by the name.

I've been 100% satisfied with mine so far. The stock shaker system amplifiers aren't bad, but the speakers definitely needed an upgrade. The biggest issue I have now is playing whack-a-mole with body panel rattles.
