Cool 1989 5.0 with premium sound package radio install

I have a 1989 mustag 5.0 ho with the premium sound system. I am changing out the head unit with a after market wire kit...

there are 4 plugs on the kit:
1 black long rectangle shape
1 grey long rectangle shape
2 grey square ones

the power, acc, neg conect to the grey

speakers to black

1 grey square plug is connected to both the rectangle, 1 with power ect. other connected to speaker

Now the rectangle plugs plug in fine but the amp in back has 2 plugs that are square.

my question is that i can get unit to power on but no sound. what is the correct way to install, unplug all fact connects and put new plugs in? checked out installdr no help

Thumbs up What I did...

I just ran new speaker wire and removed the stock amp. Everything sounds great. I found out that you need a certin adaptor thing to connect to the stock amp, in-turn, you would need a headunit without a internal amp or the ability to turn it off. It would otherwise be damaging to the speakers; headunit. Bottom line is that new head units have come a long way and it is by far more advantageful to just run new wire.

I agree 100 percent with what you did. :thumbsup Head units these days have a lot more power than 17 years ago, plus the sound quality compared to the "premium" systems of yore is much better. Please tell me you have UPGRADED your speakers also.....

Yeah, being ignorant, I ran in to the same problem. Had to cut off all the speaker wires from the stock amp harness and splice them to the head unit's harness. Then used the one adapter harness with the power lead, on key on switch, and ant.
