Default How to get LHD Mustang on the road in SA?

Hi,

I've just made a post in the classic forum too.
We're trying to get our purple 1971 Mustang on the road in South Australia. We've been told that because purple was not an original colour we can either re-spray the car and go ahead with the historic licence or change it to right hand drive and put it on a normal licence.

If anyone know a way around this, or any dealerships that were doing purple paint on 1971 Mustangs please let me know.

Thanks,
Karen

Thanks for the reply but that still wouldn't work since we'd have to go through the same process to get in registered in SA from Vic.

In the end (with some evidence of the colour being available in the 1970's) they have passed the colour so we are just waiting for some work to be done on it.

Regards,
Karen

Do you really have the much trouble registering in Australia, and due to colour? I thought things were easier. This coming from the country whose pollution standards allowed the 351 Cleveland to get built for much longer than the measly 3 years we got in the US.

Yes it can be that difficult for a LHD car since they are put on the same licence as historic vehicles and so have to be accurate.

It the car was RHD then it could have gone on a normal licence.

That seems unnecessarily strict, but I understand it now. Its just too bad you cannot keep both. I would love to have a RHD car on a LHD road and vice versus, and I would not want to be forced to choose a specific paint.

Just to clarify. In SA they have rules that basically state that the car must be original if LHD (classic), and if converted you can register as normal car.

This is quite different to the other states. Here in WA we can register any car >25yrs old LHD pretty much as it came in that year bar changing to Aus spec headlights. Modified is ok too, you can paint it any colour you like too. These rules came into effect in 2002, before that it was a little harder. Most other states are similar bar SA and QLD. Each state pretty well has its own rules.

You guys in the US have so many more freedoms in many aspects of car registration/modification.

Is it true that if you register the car as historic and LHD you will be limited to the certain milage driving, special occasions only and NOT everyday driving. I know that something like this is i QLD.

I believe so. I would only do that if I had something real special or difficult to normally register e.g pro street cars

give marti.com a yell go on line and get there phone number. if you pay them a small fee they may well find what you are looking for. there were in set years special order paint jobs done from the dealers sales desk.some of these special order paints were in varrying colors and were even down to one of type colours.
so youve got nothing to loose by giving them a call
hope this helps
