Question I need some advice!

Hello guys and girls,

My name is Greg from Brisbane, and I am also after a bit of advice from you all. I have recently become single again and I think it's close to time I got myself a car with soul. I currently have a nice tickford fairmont, and it's very comfortable and somewhat unique, but still just a souped up grandad car. I work next to Harry's Diner in Brisbane, and see all the rockers show up in their classics, and I am so envious !

My question is, what to do. I have no problem putting time in under the bonnet and on the panelwork, in fact that is my greatest joy. I'd love to do a full resto myself, but problem is I need a car for work. I do a few miles a year (40-60k), hence my delimma. I've no doubt I could get a nice resto and it would be reliable enough to do the miles, but my big concern is insurance. What have people found out there? I understand doing beyond the 8000k per year for a restricted policy will cost me, but any idea as to approx what? I would also like to know who you guys recommend, or is Shannons the way to go. I'm 35 with a rating one, so at lest that is in my favour.

Also I'm in love with the 66-67 coupes. Again I see all sorts of resto's, with all sorts of engines and powertrains, and it may be deviating from "pure", but I see merit in the possibility of a newer drivetrain. Again, I've no experience here, so again your advice is sought.

The time on the car is not a concern. Being reliable is, and being able to insure it in some manner also important. Please let me know what to do guys!

thanks,

Greg.

Insurance I doubt would be a problem. Your over 30 and are a rating 1. The cost just depends on the area you live in and the theft rate. You should call Shannons or VIGIL for a quote on insurance. I really don't think you will have a problem

There are a few 66's in the Melbourne club that have done late model engine and transmission conversions. They are running 5.0 GT HO motors with the 4 speed autos (ADOE) or 5 speed T5's behind them. I have even see a 68 Fastback with an XR8 engine and transmission in it.

My recomendation to you would be to join the Mustang Club of Australia QLD before you purchase your car. They can help and advise you.

The other thing you can do is ask heaps of questions here at AFM

Hi Anthony,

Thanks for the reply, I hoped someone could set my fears at rest. Joining the club is a good idea, I'll chase it up tomorrow. Good to hear insurance will be possible.

The late model conversion interests me, both for power, economy and reliability. Then again I figure a rebuilt 289 or 302 should be pretty reliable, and easy to work on. I do like the idea of a T5 though. Still putting oversize motors in cars runs strong in my family, so I'd have plenty of willing help!

Now all I need is a decent panel mustang, with a tired motor, and ring Herrods!!

Wonder what the boss 290 costs? I wonder if it would fit??? Still back to reality, surely the stock brakes and suspension wouldn't be up to this sort of powertrain. And no doubt that would up the insurance......

I see you are also into dirtbikes. I have a highly modded KLX300 myself.....

Greg.

T5 is a great conversion. It really makes a difference on the highway.

Rob Herrod is my mechanic. My car has clocked up more Kms on his dyno than I care to remember..... Great guy. You should check out his V10 Mustang I posted some pictures on AFM a few years ago.

Again,

Thanks oz. The website appears to be down, but I have a phonenumber for the secretary. I'll give them a call today.

I do have another question. I hate vague steering, spent my youth in mazda's, and they were approxomate steering missiles at best. The right hand conversion worries me, cause I understand what needs be done, and it could either be great, or terrible. How do I pick a good conversion, apart from the drive?

Greg.

I understand the lack of riding thing, sucks hey!

I'd recommend giving Steve Lond at Mustangs of Melbourne a ring - that's where I got my Fastback from and am very happy - can't remember tel no. but they are in Kilsyth. Steve is also President of MOCA (Vic)

Steve Lond is good and worth a phone call but he is located in Melbourne. Hence, I'd get in contact with your local MOCA.

As for how to spot a good conversion..... well, where do I start ! A good place would be to drive a few LHD and then RHD Mustangs so you know what they "should" feel like.... then you need to get technical and look under the hood. You want to check the firewall, because that is where they cut to swap the major components like steering and brake booster etc. The steering rack used will also play a big part in how the car drives. Another area to watch is the floor pan and boot. They rust quite badly and can be expensive to fix although it is not a huge job.

Check out this website for RHD Conversion Details, they also have cars for sale too --> http://www.justmustangs.com.au/html/...onversion.html

Hey guys,

Thanks for the help. Location in Australia isn't a huge issue, not with the cost of airfares these days! I'd travel for the right car.

I contacted the QLD club, and was told I couldn't join, cause you had to OWN a car. Guess it keeps out all the dreamers? Anyhow, I am welcome to go to the next event in July, which I will do. At least I can show up in a Ford....

Thanks for the tips on conversions, driving the LHD first is a great call, makes sense. I will see who I can chat up at the next QLD run.

Yet another query, just how much juice does a 289/302 use anyhow? I understand driving it hard increases the use, but what is a rough range on a tank? My falc currently gets about 12L/100k driven hard, and from what I've researched, the mid 60's stang pulls around 400k per tank @ 16 or so L/100k. Is that close to real life????

I must say I have a mixed memory of my last mustang drive. Recently got to go to Florida for a week with work, and they hired two convertabe mustangs for the guys that went. Well they were a pretty sedate lot, so I thought I'd show-off and school them in the art of the linelock / burnout. I did so at the first set of lights off the freeway, and promptly hooked left, wheels ablazing, into 6 lanes of traffic. Thank christ it was late at night, and I could work my way through the cars, back over the traffic island, and back to their side of the road. Needless to say I was banned from anymore driving in the US, and I didn't object actually.

cheers

Greg.

I used to get as much as 22mpg (highway being kind) and averaged about 16mpg with 2 bbl carb and mild cam .Now with 4bbl ,bigger cam ,head work ,lead foot ,etc probably average 12mpg (I think the lead foot is the problem but just love the sound of a V8 accelerating)

Krankione (Frank) would be more accurate on the MPG for a 289/302W.... My car is lucky to get 200Kms to a tank !

So they won't let you join MOCA without a car ! Thats ******* because we often have members in VIC joining without cars...... I'll ask Noel the Vic Secretary on Saturday and see what he says.....

If travelling is not an issue, I can send you a list of names and addresses of people in VIC who may be able to help you out with a good 60's model. Krankione would know a few good contacts too.

Hi Anthony,

Yeah well, no big deal really. I can go and hang out at the next meet, so that's all I really need at this point. Does seem a bit silly to turn down membership money though! I can understand not wanting a heap of 17 year old's with escorts joining the club, so I can understand the stance.

Faaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrk 200 k to a tank would drive me nuts! Hope it's a small tank, else you must have a beast! I'd be happy to talk to anyone around Australia that is considering selling their mid 60's coupe at around the 30k mark. Let me sure up exactly how much I can spend, drive and look at a few cars at the QLD meet later this month, and decide what I'm after. The extra for a convertable is sure appealing, and I must say the beastly 69 model is growing on me too.

I'm in no rush, and need to sell my car first too, but I'm prepared to take a loss there. It looks pretty trick for what it is, so it'll move at the right price. No point sorting a car till I have the reddies!

Thanks for the mpg Frank, it sounds fine, and even your "leadfoot" figures are below the new FPV GT you know! Your average HSV runs around the 15mpg I believe!

I would be interested to know at 100kph what sort of revs the old auto is pulling in a 60's stang.

Greg.

I must say once you own a "vert" there is no going back... There is nothing better than top down action. My advice is not to test drive one coz you'll buy it God I wish I lived in QLD

Ummm, 200kms might have been a bit low Lets try a little less nasty 280 - 320 Kms..... I use to get around 400kms before the GT40 heads and intake and then the 3.73 rear gears. I've noticed my foot has got fatter and heavier too.... Oh well, if I wanted a car for economy I would have brought a Hyundai

Thats spot on Frank.

If you want to play around with RPM vs MPH use one of the calculators. Then you play around with gear ratios, wheel size etc.... http://www.allfordmustangs.com/Detailed/635.shtml
